But, although there were some rough spots, the Antlers didwin easily.“We came over and took care of business,” said Tivy head coach Donnie Laurence. We’d been on a high for two or three weeks, and itfeiue had better mix it up a bit with the playoffs coming up. Eleven peo-was hard to get ready for a team you think you can really beat But we did play hard. We had some great hits out there.”The most notable thing about the contest is that the Antlers actually passed the hall, 17 times to be exact No, Laurence hasn’t been converted to the run-and-shoot The peerless Antler leader just thought his of-upa i. Eleple at a time have been lurking up front to stop the Antler running attack.“I thought it worked real well,” said Laurence. ”1 think people will say, ’We can’t crowd them.’ ” Tivy did have success through the air. Quarterback Dan Abel completed nine passes for 121 yards. His favorite receiver was George Guthrie, who made like a miniature Raymond Berry in catching five pastes for 90 yards, the best performance for an Antler receiver this season.George Guthrie is an excellent little receiver,” said Laurence. “He has a great pair of hands.”It was the defense that got the motor going for Tivy. While the offense seemed to be out somewhere on Loop 410, the defense had a feast red-oogging Cougar quarterback Scott Cummings.. Cummings was sacked for an 8-yard loss and forced to cough up the ball cm the West Campus 22. The slow-starting offense managed to drive it in from there, with halfback Yoncy Edmonds going into the end zone from 2 yards outTivy soon got on the board again on a 52-yard, seven-play scoring march. It was Edmonds again, thistime on a 4-yard run. Todd Schla-doer’s PAT made it 14-0.The Antlers had a chance to ice things at the end of the first half when Abel and Guthrie connected for 56 yards on a fly pattern. But Tivy’s drive died at the 5 on three straight pass incompletions and a missed 21-yard field goal by Schladoer. This failure didn’t daunt Tivy in the second half. The Anders matched 78 yards, thanks mainly to some big plays on third down. Fullback Blair Hunt got the touchdown by bursting in from 4 yards out. Schladoer’s PAT tty was wide, leaving the score at 20-0.West Campus then made its one real effort to get into the game by driving to the Tivy 18. But the Antlers stuffed Mark Schuhardt on a fourth-and-one play.If this was disappointing to West Campus, what followed was even worse. Edmonds broke loose for an 82-yard touchdown run, instantly accelerating into high gear after he broke several tackles up the middle. If there was any tension left in the game, Edmonds’ run dissolved it.The long run capped another tremendous night for the 5-9, 180-pound senior, who rushed for a season-high 136 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns. He now has rushed for990 yards on 120 carries and scored 12 touchdowns, the type of statistics that should mark him for s6me post-season honors. Edmonds has rushed for at least 100 yards in seven of Tivy’s ninepmes. It would have been an even bigger night for him if a 59-yard scoring run hadn’t been called back on a penalty. Edmonds has lost nearly half a dozen long-distance scoring runs onpenalties this season.West Campus finally got on the scoreboard with just 2:44 left in the game. Going to the run-and-shoot, the Cougars went on a 60-yard scoring march that culminated with the beleaguered Cummings tossing a 17-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Price.Hunt added 52 yards on 17 tries. Abel had 41 rushing yards on eight attempts as he emphasized his arm more than his option runs.Laurence had praise for the defense, saying, The defense reallytook the heat off us while we were still stumbling around out there on offense.”The Antlers, ranked seventh in the Associated Press Schoolboy Poll, are now 8-1 overall. The win over West Campus assured the Antlers of a tie for the District 28-4A championship.
