Senior Chnek Koeck made the second team as an interior lineman on defense.Green Bay Southwest, as befits a champion, earned eight spots on the 23-man squad, which includes a kicking specialist (Southwest’s Tom Biolo) for the first time this year.Fond du Lac and Green Bay Prebie were next with four first-team picks each, Sheboygan South had three, Sheboygan North two and Green Bay East and West one each. Manitowoc, which tied Fond du Lac and Preble and South for second place, did not get a first-team berth, but landed five players on the second team.Southwest’s players on the offensive team include Russ Mann at running back, Dave Schauer at tackle, Brett Mayer at guard and Biolo, the kicker. Rutherford, end Drew Hoegger, linebacker Dave Henquinet and defensive back Dennis Blasczyk made the defensive team.Preble’s selections include junior running back Rick N iedermeyer, guard-interior lineman Bart Peters and center Eric Hansen. South placed both ends on offense. Gary Meseck and Mark Schley and junior quarterback Gordy Zastrow.Zastrow edged Niedermeyer, 11-10, for the offensive player of the year honor. Zastrow, Niedermeyer and Meseck were unanimous picks on offense, and Peters was the only player chosen on both teams.Norenberg C6-0. I7fl was the mainstay as Fond du Lac won the defensive championship for a record ninth straight year He won the ‘Blaster Award for the fast three weeks of the season, was Fond du Lac’s Mr. Defense’* and had his biggest game when he made 25 tackles — including 14 unassisted — against Green Bay East..Norenberg. who was the outstanding novice division amateur boxer in the sta*e this year, was a two-rear starter on defense for Fond du Lac. He also plaved split end on offense, and caught the winning touchdown p a s « .against Preble in lV final game of the season.Vande Guchte (6-0, 175) was also a two-year starter for Fond du Lac and was so forceful against the pass that teams seldom threw m his area. He was one of the mam reasons that Fond du Lac gave up juvt 279 yards passing.Fond du Lac coach George Titan calls Vande Guchte “a’ super defensive back. H e wasn’t beat at all.”Zabel (6-3, 200) finishedsecond to Norenberg in the “Mr. Defense” voting, and had an excellent year,” Trtan said. He missed being a unanimous choice by one point, and was instrumental in helping Fond du Lac rush for 1,141 yards, fourth 'best in the Valley.Hanisch (6-1, 180) was the No. 2 rusher in the Valley most of the season, and finished third with 548 yards in 133 tries, a 4.1 a average. He also scored five touchdowns, and was a tough defensive back, intercepting two passes.Reinhold (6-1, 190) was dieonly Fond du Lac offensive lineman with any type of experience when the season began.. He was a steady performer all season long, as was Lewis (6-1, 235), who teamed with Wilhelms a t tackle.Koeck (6-2, 245) missed the last three games with a knee injury, but played well at defensive tackle for Food du Lac. He was a three-year member of the varsity.Zastrow completed 55 of 90 passes for 1,069 yards, a percentage of .611. He threw nine touchdown passes, and suffered four interceptions. Niedermeyer gained 1,035 yards in 149 attempts, a 6.9 average, and became ooly the fourth Valley player to gain over 1,000 yards in a season, and the second junior to do it (Fond du Lac’s Phil Johnson was the first with 1,007 yards in 1973).Mann was second in rushing with 6® yards, and Rob Van Driest of North, the other first-team running back, was fourth with 522 yards.
