Western Scores Upset Over BimrougttsTo Win First Victory Of Season, 6-®9As Trespalacios Piles Up BigvardageRed Raiders Stave Off ManyBomber Drives By Recovering Fumbles Near Their Own GoalBy Gilbert and Magee, M.Saturday afternoon the Western lied Raiders gallantly marched onto Futon Field to meet one of their toughest A.B.C. opponents, John Burroughs, and when the final whistle* ' i •sounded, the Rumleymen had won a glorious upset victory, the first of the year, (5-0.It was a battle in which the cadets . lowed courage in staving off many•iomber attacks to protect their slen-■»ier lead. Alert Raider players, tackling hard and following the ball, stopped several Burroughs threats by recovering fumbles in the shadow of their own goal posts. When there was a loose ball, the cadets pounced upon it.Trespalacios Drives HardOn offense, Tony Trespalacios, full-jack, carried the ball three-fourths of the time to drive for a total of close to 150 yards while only, losing eight. His gains on the ground totaled as much as the whole Western team has9made in some previous games.The result was. a happy ending for the victory-hungry Red Raiders.The game began with Catsworth of Burroughs kicking off to Jerry Nudelman, who reached his own 20.However, the cadets had to punt, and■the Bombers threatened at once by4reeling off three first downs before being stopped by a fighting cadet line. Both teams showed a powerful offense luring the first half.No Score In First HalfIn the second quarter, Trespalaciost/ ialmost single-handedly plowed out to* imidfield. Then the Bombers took Ben-i •jamin’s punt back to their own 35. Catsworth and Corrington smashed toAllen, then advanced the ball out of danger to the Burroughs 45 as the quarter ended.In the final , quarter, the Raiders fought desperately to protect their lead of 6 points. The Rumleymen, headed by Trespalacios, reached the Bomber 11-yard line before losing the ball on an intercepted pass. The St. Louisans launched another powerful drive, deep into Western territory, McDonald caught a pass, and Catsworthjammed for, gain after gain. When a Bomber score seemed certain, Don Myers recovered a fumble for Western on the 8-yard line to stop another threat.Bombers Still Threaten% yAgain the Bombers tried to score. They took the ball and plowed to Western's 20 as the time ran out,9giving the Raiders a great victory.For Western, Tony Trespalacios was the big gun on offense, aided by Bob Allen. Nudelman also picked up some yardage. The victory, however, was due largely to the defensive work of Spradling, Mott, Jansky, Myers, and others.
