From staff reports f ;;vf *The Beddingfield boys and 2 Fike girls cross-country teams will hit the course today at Beeson Park in Kemersville for the High School Athletic Association 5,000-meter champion-mrn::The Bruins are making their second appearance as a team in the 2-A championships while the Lady Demons are going as a group for the third straight year and fourth time in six seasons inthe 3-A race. -Additionally, Beddingfield senior Heather Cuddington in the 2-A girls, Hunt freshman Lauren West in the 3-A girls and Southern Nash senior Nepolian Patel in the 3-A boys will compete as individuals.Beddingfield reached the state2-A championship in 2010 whenit finished 15th out of 16 teams. Only senior Tyler Amerson of the current Bruins squad finished in the scoring at the 2010 meet,The Bruins, four-time Eastern Plains Conference champions, finished third in the 2-A East . Regional meet last Saturday in f, Greenville. Sophomore Detrice Higgs, the EPC’s top runner, led Beddingfield with an eighth-place finish in 17 minutes, 43 seconds. All five Beddingfield scorers were in the top third of the field.Freshman Jacob Vamell, senior Marquel Bullock, Amerson and freshman Chris Lee provided the points.This will be the third state meet for Amerson, who ran last year as an individual and finished in 18:30.Cuddington, who also ran in the 2011 state meet, was fifth at the regional meet in a season-best time of 20:42.63. | ACarrboro, led by two-time defending champion Grace Morken, is seeking its fourth f girls crown in a row. Defending boys champion North Lincoln won the West Regional while Richlands was the East king, fThe Fike girls, without a top-10 finisher at the regional, will look to send long-time head coach Tom Griffith, who will retire after Saturday’s meet, out with a top-10 finish. Griffith said the Big East Conference-champion Lady Demons, third at the 3-A East Regional, should expect to finish in the top 12.“Anything above 12th would be icing on the cake,* he said.Senior Martha-Scott Benson is Fike’s fastest runner, running the regional course in 21:12, but the Lady Demons’ power is in their pack with senior Kristen Edmonds, juniors CeCe Yarbrough and Kristin Ewan and sophomore Leighann Bowen always within 30 seconds of one another at the finish. Freshmen Hailee Cockrell and Marie Page Smith will add depth and gain usefulexperience for Fike. *Tm just happy with this group of kids. It’s a desirable team to have to run with that (pack) mentality,” Griffith said. “This is the team 1 wanted to go out with.”West has proven to be a phe-nom for the Lady Warriors, running a career-best 20:01 to finish second behind defending state3-A champion Blake Dodge of West Carteret at the regional meet. ^That time was the best by nearly 18 seconds for West, who acknowledged she liked her first experience in a big meet. IfGriffith said the Lady Demons I will welcome West, the Wilson I County girls champion, into their tent at the meet Saturday. -S“Wie don’t have to be Fike and -Hunt on the day of the state meet. We can all be a big crosscountry family and support one another,” he reminded.Patel, who collapsed from dehydration at the finish line of the regional meet, will make his third-straight state appearance. He was sixth in 17:18 last week but Patel vowed after the meet to attempt a career-best showingaround 16:40 in Kemersville.Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won both 3-A team titles last year with Chapel Hill in second place in each race.
