Page 4 — Courier News Thunder, Blytheville, (Ark.)—Sunday, November 3,1991By DON BOWEN CN Staff WriterGOSNELL — The first play of the game set the stage of Friday night’s game against Hoxie as the Mustangs froze and the Pirates heated up in the chilly weather.On the first play from scrimmage, Hoxie quarterback Robbie Bullock fumbled the snap at the Hoxie 30 yard line, recovered by Gosnell.Gosnell got off cold, inching the ball to the goal line. Junior full back Rudv Smith took the ball tothe 28 yard line before senior Tail back A1 Theragood moved it to the 27 yard line. Senior quarterback Jeff Ellis moved the ball to the 20 on a quarterback keep up the middle. On the next two plays Theragood was dropped at the 23 yard line before moving the ball back to the 20 yard line. Junior slot back Tyrone Wiggins ran around the outside, moving the ball to the 16 yard line before Ellis moved the ball to the 6 yard line on a quarterback keep up the middle. Wiggins had a touchdown runcalled back on the next play because of a 15-yard blocking below the waist penalty against Gosnell. From the 17 yard line Wiggins finally made it into the end zone on a pass from Ellis with 8:07 left in the first half to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead. Jenz Jernigan’s extrapoint kick was no good.The Pirates heated up again on the first drive in the second quarter. With the drive starting late in the first quarter, the Pirates started at their own 31 yard line.Sv!\*V-*Hard hittingGosnell senior tail back A1 Theragood rushed for creases the Pirates record to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in109 yards on 25 carries against Hoxie Friday night conference play,in the Pirates 26-6 rout of the Mustangs. The win in-Theragood ran the first two plays, to the 37 yard line and the 38 ard line before Ellis moved the all across mid-field on a quarterback keep to the Hoxie 47 yard line. Wiggins moved the ball to the 43 yard line on the final play of the first quarter. Wiggins opened the second quarter with a 20-yard run to the Hoxie 23 yard line. Theragood moved the ball to the 19 yard line before Smith ran to the 13 yard line. Wiggins moved the ball across the 10 yard line to the eight. Theragood took the next four plays before crossing into the end zone to give Gosnell a 12-0 lead. Gosnell missed a two-point conversion as Jernigan was stopped short of the goal line after taking a flip from Ellis, who was taking the snap on a fake extra-point try.It didn’t get any better for Hoxie as Pirates’ guard Mike Pfeiffer caught an interception at the Hoxie 25 yard line with 6:11 left in the second quarter. Theragood took the first two plays to the Hoxie 15 yard line before Gosnell was moved back five yards on a motion penalty. Two plays later Ellis hit Smith for a 20-yard touchdownpass with 3:56 left in the second quarter. Jernigan’s kick put the Pirates on top 19-0.But the Pirates weren’t finished yet. They would go into the locker room at halftime with a 26-0 lead.After the Pirates fielded a punt at the Gosnell 49 yard line, Ellis moved the ball across mid-field to the Hoxie 49 yard line. Theragood ran the next play to the Hoxie 45 yard line before Wiggins took the ball to the Hoxie 36 yard line. The Pirates were then called back to the 40 yard line on a holding penalty. Theragood got the call on the next two plays, moving the ball to the 24 and the 15 yard lines. Wiggins ran the ball to the 10 yard line before Theragood ran into the endzone with 14 seconds left in the second quarter. Jernigan’s extra point kick gave the Pirates a 26-0 lead.The Pirates got close again on the opening drive of the second half, but Gosnell’s second team was unable to move the ball past the Hoxie three yard line.The Mustangs finally got on the board on the last drive of thecontinued on page 5
