Rogers Rushes for 198 Yards in AssaultBy RICH ROMINEAgoura’s Chargers ruined the Santa Clara Saints’ homecoming in a 42-14 triumph before 3,000 fans in the Frontier League battle of the survival at Houser Field Saturday night.Agoura’s Darren Rogersgained 198 rushing on 14 carries and Dave Hammons garnered 162 yards on 15 tries as the Charger wishbone attack threw the Saint defenders off balance most of the night.The Chargers wasted littletime in starting a first-half scoring explosion. On a third down situation, quarterback Andy Mussack pitched out to Hammons, who darted 55 yards for a touchdown with 9:56 left in the first period. Rogers converted the two points on a run.Santa Clara couldn’t move theball, and the Chargers took over on their own 32 after Saint JoeBrick’s punt. Agoura’s Dave Hammons gained 18 yards on two plays and then Rogers scampered up the middle for a 50-yard touchdown run. A. Mussack failed to get theconversion on a keeper as theChargers led, 14-0 with 6:25 gone.Santa Clara rebounded with signal-leader Vince Penza firing a 26-yard pass to Allan Pinedo and moments later Pinedo grabbed a 35-yard screen pass for a touchdown. Jim LaPointe split the uprights with 5:05 left.Agoura led 22-7, and A. Mussack tallied on a keeper from the one yard line. However, earlier in the series, Dal Fronterot recovered Andy’s fumble and then Saint Dave Laut took the ball and lost itas Agoura set up a 28-7 lead. A. Mussack’s pass failed for the two point try with 3:59 left in the first half.The Saints desperately tried to battle back and make a contest out of the lopsided game. Agoura clipped on the opening third period kickoff and the Saints had good field position at the Charger 40. The Saints’ running attack led by Pinedo, Nick Beltran and Penza carried the team down field.Penza tallied the touchdown ona keeper.LaPointe kicked the pointafter slicing Agoura’s lead to 28-14 at 8:25. The Saints came back again when Penza tossed a 17 yard scoring strike to Dave Garza, but the TD was called back for an ineligible receiver down field. Agoura took possession and they began torun the ball and let the clockrun down.Rogers broke away for a 31-yard touchdown run with 11:45 left in the game and Chris Mussack grabbed a 22-yard screen pass on a fourth down play for the final touchdown with 5:40 left.The Chargers gained 412yards rushing and A. Mussqck threw for only 37 yards.
