Vernois Miss Chanceslibby Scores On7- Yard Slice InOpening QuarterMt. Vernon's Rams gained another victory in the statistics column last night but a first-quarter touchdown paid off for the Centralia Orphans with a 7-0 victory on VernoisField.The lone score of the hard-fought contest came when Mt. Vernon failed on a punting attempt. Kicker Tom Henry was rushed and had to try a run on fourth down. He was dropped for a 13-yard loss on the Ram 13-yard line.Vernois have won nine games and two have been tied.Centralia took the opening kickoff and was checked for throe downs but punted Mt. Vernon into a hole on the 7-yard line.Jim Carter, Charles Gunnell and Larry Kite picked up a first down. The Rams were tossed back on the next series and the Orph’s Zibby returned Henry’s punt to the 24.Centralia’s Steve Zibby gained three yards, a pass was incomplete, then RichLangin gained three more.On fourth down, Zibby swung to his right, cut hack over tackle and churned for seven yards into the end xone.Bruce Myers split the uprights with his conversion boot,but the Orphs were penalizedfive yards on the play. Crenshaw broke through to j block Henry's punt. The ball i bounded out of bounds on Mt. Vernon's 5-yard line.On four plays the Rams knocked Centralia back to the 10-yard line and took over.The locals couldn’t go but Henry booted to Centralia1 s 42.booted again, and once more his kick was perfect for the 7-0 lead and the eventual victory Centralia was credited with a first down on its touchdown play. It was the lone first down which the Orphans made in the* opening half. They managed just three first downs in the game,two coming in the final halfwith the assistance of penalties against Mt. Vernon.Frank Talley recovered an Orphan fumble and the Rams had the ball In Centralia territory for the first time. A penalty cancelled a Mt. Vernon first down ami the locals punted to the 27.Linebacker, Ron Simmons with eight unassisted tackles for the night, led the Ram defensive performance which shackled the Orphans’ ground game.Crnirnlia gained 33 yards in s’ •• \\y\ half and lost 23. In i' -' final two quarters the Or-nVms nicked up 30 yards rushing and completed one pass for I 1 yards. Net scrimmage gain lor the visitors in the game — 45 yards.However, in handing out praise for the Ram defense, it must be observed that Centralia’s defense was the first to blank Mt. Vernon in eight games this season.Right end Jim Eggers, tackle Mike Holtkamp and tackle Tom Crenshaw were outstanding stoppers for the Orphs who, though allowing the Rams to move 125 yards on the ground and 39 through the air, also put on charges which dropped the Vernois for a total of 101 yards in losses.Again Mt. Vernon held. The Orphs booted a 17-yarder back to the 44.Walter Pogue hit Eddie Edwards with a 5-yard pass, then Pogue executed a neat 12-yard run for a first down on the Centralia 27. Gunnell got nine yards in two carries and Pogue bucked for a first down on the 15. However, Centralia slopped two plays for big losses and a 9-yard aerial from Pogue to John Wielt to get the first down.The Orphs failed to move before halftime.Mt. Vernon put on its best drive of the game after taking the third-period kickoff. jStarting from the 18, the Rams clicked for four successive first downs to the Centralia 34. Edwards, (inn-nell. Kite, and Lnrr.v Shields picked up yards running, andPogue connected with Wielt on passes good for II and seven yards.It was the sixth defeat of the year for the Rams aa against victories over Harrisburg and Fairfield. Oddly enough, it was the sixth Mt, Vernon game of the season to be decided by the margin of a single touchdown.Two penalties halted the march. One of the assessments came on a crucial play when Pogue passed to Wielt who tried a lateral toss when tackled. The play would have produced a first down on the Centralia 20, but officials ruledWielt’s pitchout was a f o r-ward rather than a lateral.The Rams were inside the Orphan 20-yard line early in the fourth period, then missed a final big chance with three minutes left to play.Arthur EIUs, 200-pound senior tackle, scooped up a Centralia fumble and rambled 26 yards to Centralia’s 29-yard line.The triumph put Centralia on the winning side for the campaign. The Orphans have won four, lost three and tied one.On the traditional side, it was Centralia’s 28th victory in the 39-game rivalry with Mt. Vernon, starting back in 1925. TheEdwards and Carter picked up six yards and Pogue passed to Wielt for a first down on the 17. Pogue and Gunnell bucked to Centralia’s 11-yardline—and there it stopped! Pogue was tossed for lasses of 13 and 19 yards on the next two plays.The Rams close Hie season at Salem next Friday night.
