Perhaps no western state, metropolis or small city, could furnish such an array of notable baseballists as did Oxnard Sunday. Most prominent, of course, was Fred Snodgrass, and Charlie Hall, the famous pitcher of the Red Sox, and Art Shaefer, of the Giants, and Babe Reams, and Tom Hasty and Ed Heame, and others of lesser note. All sorts of good baseball stories were told, and Snodgrass and Hall had to repeat to admiring groups the incidents of the recent struggle for the championship.Clever Tales by ManyThen with full interiors, speeches were in order, and introduced by Dolly Gray, the master of ceremonies, Charles Blackstock in a pleasant and effective speech told the admiration of all for Fred Snodgrass, and presented him on behalf of all with a diamond pin, which in the cravat of | the hero shone. Throughout the af-jternoon. jSnodgrass with the modesty becorn-ing a man who has faced 40,000 mad-dened enthusiasts in the Gotham arena, replied that though he ill-de-served such a charming gift, yet that he appreciated it the more, and that | wherever he went he kept in his minda thought of dear Oxnard, and of the warm-hearted people hero. ICharlie Hall, too, proved that his spirit is as generous as his pitchingis able, for he spoke mostly of Fred ^Snodgrass, and of the latter’s playing.“I used to think once,” said Hall, “that Fred was a good, ordinary baseball player, but I want to say that he is a wonder, and that he ranks as high as any of the New York or Boston men.”Art Shaefer was brief but witty, and Tom Hasty and Ed Hearne added a few bouquets.Babe Reams was interesting and T. A. Rice, as young as any present, discoursed a few moments in a reminiscent fashion.
