Legion F alls In The NinthBy RUSSELL RAWLINGSPost 13 let one get away Friday night.The Wilson American Legion oaseball team led from the first inning to the ninth, but two unearned runs in the top half of that fatal last inning left the local Legion with a 6-5 loss, its first of the year.Goldsboro remained undefeated in the process by pushing its record to 5-0 overall including 1-0 in Eastern Division play. Wilson falls to l-l in the division with an 8 p.m. game at Washington tonight.Three ninth inning errors didn’t help matters as RichardLittle came in for what looked to be a save, only to leave with the loss after Wilson squandered a 5-4 lead.After Little fanned the leadoff batter, pitcher Mike Winbush reached on an error. It was a tough play for David Lawhon. who made a play from short in the eighth inning which brought the crowd to its feet.Dean Cooke followed with a single and Winbush, having stolen second with two out, raced home for the tying run.Cooke went to second on the throw. Wilson had him picked off at second but Little’s throw was away from the base and Cooke ended up on third. He scored from there on David Frederick’s grounder, which Charles Simpson almost made the play on. That left the score at 6-5.Wison had a chance in the ninth as Simpson led off with a„ walk and stole second. He stranded there, however, as Donald Williams tanned before Mack Smith *»d Lawhon flied out to center.Goldsboro scored once in the first when Cooke led off with a single and came in on Terry Coates’ sacrifice fly. Wilson then took charge with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.With one gone Simpson walked. Donald Williams followed with a single and Simpson scored on Smith’s single. Lawhon walked to load the bases and Ricky Matthews brought in two of the runners with a single to right. Lawhon then scored on a sacrifice fly from Doug Godwin.Goldsboro came back to make it 4-3 in the second with two runs on two Wilson errors and one hit Wilson pushed ahead at 5-3 in the fifthWilliams led off with a single and scored on Smith’s double.Goldsboro edged back into contention in the eighth when Coates led off with a homer off Lashley over the rightfield fence. Winbush had a double for Goldsboro in the fourth and a foul ball which cleared the fence in the secondWinbush also collected the win, pushing him to 3-0 on the year He left in the ninth with a 2-0 count on Simpson. The Goldsboro pitcher injured his ankle on a bunt by Mike Wells in the bottom half of the eightLashley worked eight innings but was not involved in the decision. Byron Sasser went from leftfield to the mound in the ninth and saved the win for Goldsboro and the hard-throwing Winbush.Wilson had a total of 10 hits as Williams had three of them, all singles. Smith added a pair of hits including a double and along with Matthews took credit for two RBI. Coates had a homer, a single and a sacrifice fly for Goldsboro while knocking in two runs.
