By TIM McDOUGLE Staff WriterADA~“I hate the 440, but I can do it.”Bluffton’s Janet Shelly proved she ‘can do it’ as earning a return trip to the state meet by capturing the 440-yard dash Saturday at the Class A Ohio Northerngirls' district track championship.Shelly, who also gained a berth in the 220, heads the list of area standouts who will compete in the state championships Friday and Saturday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.Defending state champion Minster ran away with the team title with 113 points while second place Tinora compiled 44. Miller City and Bluffton tied for third with 20.In the Class AA district at Bowling Green, Fostoria’s Betty Jackson set new meet records in the discus and the shot put pacing Redmen, which tallied 34 team points, to a third place finish behind Clyde (92) and Eastwood (37). With strong performances in the relays, Elmwood placed seventh with 22 points.Findlay High, in the Class AAA district also at Bowling Green, failed to qualify anyone to the state meet. Loni Reusch placed fifth in the 220 (26.7) and Sara Ringle sixth in the long jump (16-3%) but only the top two advance.Toledo Rogers captured three relays and three more individual events to win the team title with 70 points. Toledo Scott finished second (48) and Toledo Start third (39).Shelly, who finished third in the 1976 state meet 440 as a freshman, raced to a 59.8. She then turned in a 27.3 in the 220 earning a berth in her second event. The 880 relay team of Sue Detterer, Janice Bostelman, Pat Erford and Lynne Bloor finished third (1:49,9) and Detterer, Erford, Bloor and Kathy Boulis combined for a third in the medley relay (1:55.3). Detterer leaped 16-% in the long jump for a third.Other area relay teams state bound include Cory-Rawson’s 440 team of Lydia Gauss, Julie Woodruff, Kim Woodruff amd Kathi Inninger, who finished second with a 51.9 and a second place by Bluffton’s medley relay team in 1:55.2.The mile was one of the most exciting races as three area competitors finished within one second of each other. Minster’s Jackie Meyer won the event in 5:30.2 with Marilyn Hull of Hardin Northern second in 5:32.4, Becky Putnam third with a 5:32.5 and Van Buren’s Terri Baker fifth and a 5:33.3.Hull, who placed third at the state last year, was running fifth with 220 yards left and passed three girls in the last stretch to finish second. Her previous best time had been 5:36.4.“The only real tough competition I have had this year has been Terri Baker of Van Buren and today they really pushed me to the good time,” said the soft-spoken sophomore.Like Sheliy, Hull has frightening memories of the state meet. “I was terrified, that place is so big. I was the only girl from our team and I was just sitting there all by myself.”Leipsic’s Cindi Kauffman, who was a triple winner at last week’s Findlay sectional, qualified in the 100 and the 220. She placed fourth in both turning an 11.8 in the 100 and a 26.9 in the 220.Deb Ketner of Pandora-Gilboa finished second in the high jump at 5-1 and just missed qualifying in the hurdles, finishing sixth (12.0). Ketner heads the list of area high jumpers with a top mark of 5-3.Other area qualifiers include North Baltimore’s Trina Lause, who finished third in the 880 (2:27.2), Lynn Coe of Ada, who placed fifth in the long jump (15-6%) and Lori Flick of Liberty-Benton, who finished fifth in the 100 (11.9).Jackson paced Fosforia with her record setting performances in the shot and discus. She put Ctie shot 39-11, breaking her own record of 37-1 set in 1975, and tossed the discus 117-1.Hoover, meanwhile, joins Jackson as the Redmens’ other qualifier posting an 11.1 in capturing the hurdles and tying her own record set in 1976.Elmwood compiled most of their team points on second place finishes by their 880 and 440 relay teams. The 880 team of Dawne Hathaway, Judy Boekbrader, Jana Boekbrader and Lori Hackathorn raced to a 1:47.4 while Hathaway, Hackathorn, Jana Boekbrader and Cindy Snyder ran a 51.6.
