Mike Brownlee and Greg Compton each had two hits. Del Beard made two great defensive catches in the field, and Todd Harthun and Jim Kochman got their first hits of the season. Steve Stanicek led the Red Sox attack with a triple and a single, Dimitri Mitchell doubled and Brad Hoffman and Alan Weed each singled.Defensively, the Sox pulledoff two double plays — one by the center fielder, Eric Miskow, who after catching the ball threw out a runner at the plate; the other by Tony Wesley, who caught a sinking liner at second and caught the Brave runner before he could return to base.hskoff pitched a two-hitter to run tied it all up. The Cards then keep Little Rock (3-0) unbeatendowning New Orleans (1-1) 10 to 1. Greg Kash and Ed Dean collected the only hits for New Orleans.CHATTANOOGA (2-1) kept pace with the leaders as Patrick Leuser struck out eleven on a two-hitter to key an 8 to 1 victory over Birmingham (1-2).Charlie Dostal, Scot Blatchford and Brett Bontrager shared the hitting for the winners. Brian Wilke and Billy King belted doubles for Birmingham and Wilke turned in three fielding gems topped off by a double play in the sixth.Brad Bailor’s strong pitching was backed by a fine team defense highlighted by two rally-killing catches by center fielder Bryan Paterson in Nashville’s (1-2) 13 to 4 decision over Atlanta (¥2-2*2). Michael Hopper took hitting honors for Nashville with two doubles and a single, while Marshall Melcer, w ith two hits, and Anthony Scott were the offense for Atlanta.Augusta (2-0) stood on top in the National division after besting Mobile (V2-2Vfe) 8 to 1 on a two-hitter bv Steve Deitsch-wman. Deitschman struck out 10 and was touched for a harmless single by Roger Clark and a run-producing double by Andy Rickus. The game was highlighted by some timely hitting by Rich Alvarado, Steve Sebastian and Scott Smith. They were backed up by fine defensive plays by Doug Alba, Bruce Paterson and Bill McMurray. John Toomey pitched three no-hit innings.St. Paul (3-0) downed BuffaloSalem was helped by excellent pitching from Paul Jach, Don Gayton and winner Mike Dunn. Ed Filec and Jim Bonfiglio contributed RBI for Peoria, while Filec and Rich Seddon shared the pitching.Belleville had two big innings as they romped 7-1 over Aurora. Terry Simental, Mike Leuser and Richard Schmelkin had consecutive hits in the three-run first inning. Carl Willis starred(0-3) by 6-4. The winners were defensively by completing ancontributed important hits in the attack while Mark I^ng struck out 10 Joliet batsmen. Dave Norris’ hitting helped the Joliet cause while Keith Van Lysebettens sparkled defensively.Joliet was also victimized by Decatur in the makeup of a postponed game. Greg Johnson, Jim Fullmer, Mark Hansen and Steve Abelman all had hits in the 9-0 win. Phil Rockrohr struck out seven Joliet batters.were 3-for-4 at the plate.In a fine defensive battle, Dallas edged Fort Worth 3-1 to remain undefeated in the Midwest league. Dallas scored first with two runs in the second inning as Jeff Koranda singled to open the inning, stole second, then advanced to third on a single by Ernie Tanner. Athletics had 10 hits, two apiece for Bob Swanson, Pat Reynolds and Randy Shafer.
