Register staff reportsBEREA, Ohio — Briana Shook won the Division II cross country state title and guided Seneca East to the girls team title last October.She’ll be going for a state track title this week.Shook stole the show in Saturday’s Division III regional track meet at Baldwin-Wallace College, capturing regional titles in both the 1600- and the 3200-meter runs to advance to the state meet in Dayton.In doing so, the Tigers finished second in the team standings with 46 points behind regional champions Hawken School (87%).Shook first won the 1600 in 5 minutes, 14.36 seconds. She then blistered the course in the 3200 by winning in 11:11.06 — nearly 23 seconds in front of second-place finisher Kim Nemergut of South Range.Teammate Nikki Hines finished third (11:36.47), also qualifying for the state meet.“Briana and Nikki are two of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen,” Seneca East girls coach Dick Ver-hoff said. “And it paid off for them today.”Shook returns to the post-season meet where she finished second in the 3200 last year.“It was a great day,” Shook said. “This is something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. ”Shook’s performance played a big role in denying the Norwalk St. Paid duo of Erin McFadden and Katie Nickoli an invitation to state. The Flyers finished 18th in the team standings with 10 points.Both St. Paul runners failed to qualify in the 1600. Nickoli was sixth (5:29.16) and McFadden finished seventh (5:36.37). McFadden then finished fifth in the 3200 in 12:08.55.Also advancing to the state meet for Seneca East is its 4x400- and 4x800-meter relay teams. Both finished fourth.Brandy Hines, Sarah Ruffing, Sarah Reiter and Jackie Fries led the 4x400 team with a state-qualifying time of 4:09.40.The Hines, Ruffing and Kristen Elmlinger then recorded a time of 9:44.1 in the 4x800.“It was a total team effort in therelays,” Verhoff said.Western Reserve’s Lisa Waller will also move on. She placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 1012 inches Thursday. Cassie Palmer of South Central also qualified forstate after finishing fourth in the discus (118-1) on the first day of com petition.In the boys division, Seneca East’s boys qualified two relay teams — 4x400 and the 4x800 — for the state meet.The 4x400 team finished third in 3:28.09, which is three seconds faster than their previous best time.“We all ran strong,” Morgan Gillett, a member of the relay team, said. “We just wanted to get there (the state meet). ”The 4x800 team also finished third with a time of 8:09.5.South Central’s Mike Howard qualified in both the discus and shot put on Thursday. Howard won the shot put with a heave of 57-5% and then finished second in the discus with a mark of 153-8.Also qualifying for the state meet was New London’s Sam Roberts, who finished fourth in the 800 with a timeof 1:58.62.BOYS RESULTSTeam Stangings — 1.
