His results are at least comparable to Fischer at the same age. These words, uttered last year by Garry Kasparov to a French journalist are rare praise from a world champion who is often brutally critical in his estimate of younger players.Vladimir Kramnik, the object of Kasparov's eulogy, is a 6-foot 4-inch Russian teenager with a passion for chess and — as befits his height — volleyball. At 17, he is already ranked 6th in the world among all chess players — an obviously astounding feat. But despite accomplishments and accolades, Kramnik is as modest about his own abilities as he is generous in his estimate of others.Of his former teacher and present adversary Kramnik says:He surely does not see me as a potential threat. I admire Kasparov, he plays very well. He plays so well that I believe I can never achieve his level. And of the 16-year-old Hungarian prodigy Judit Polgar, one of his main rivals but significantly below him in rating, the young Russian told the Swiss chess magazine Schach-woche:For me Judit is expecially gifted, perhaps as gifted as Kasparov. But demurs and modesty to the contrary, Kramnik is already a chess superstar and Kasparov's likely successor.Last summer, he helped lead the Russian team to a lopsided Olympic victory in Manila when he scored 8-1 andwon a gold medal at 4th board.More recently he finished fifth at the prestigious Linares (Spain) International Tournament and tied for second at Dortmund (Germany) behind the former world champion Anatoly Karpov.Below is an entertaining and creative win over Vassily Ivanchuk, third-ranked player in the world, from Linares.Ivanchuk Kramnik1. e4 c52.
