JEFF DAVIS Sparkling One-HitterMIKE WELLS Bangs Out Three HitsDAVID LA WHON Continues To Hit WellCHARLES SIMPSON Contributes Two HitsJeff Davis Spins One-Hitter As Post 13 Cops League OpenerBy RUSSELL RAWLINGSJeff Davis may have had nights on which he felt better, but its doubtful that he’s ever pitched a better game than the one he served up at Fleming Stadium Thursday night.Davis, having shared mound time with the remainder of the Wilson American Legion Post 13 staff through seven nonconference games, had the job to himself against Williamston in the Eastern Division opener and got the job done.Davis went the distance, nine innings, and recorded a one-hit shutout as Wilson remained undefeated through eight games with a 5-0 win over Williamston, now 0-1 in the league.Davis was in command throughout the game, fanning the first two batters he faced. But Williamston’s Keith Clark was also doing a fine job through five innings as the game stood scoreless.Then in the top of the sixthWilson got on the scoreboard as Mike Wells led off with a single, his second hit of the night. Charles Simpson followed with a single after Wells stole second. That brought Donald Williams to the plate and he also singled, scoring Wells and moving Simpson from first to third.Mack Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Wells before David Lawhon came through with his second single of the game, moving Williams to third. From there Williams scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Ricky Matthews, making it 3-0 Wilson.Williamston got its only hit of the night in the fifth inning when Wiley Keel hit a dribbler back to the third base side of the mound. Davis and Smith got the ball at the same time and Smith tried to make the play at first, but there was no play. A bad throw left Keel at second, but there was no doubt that the ball was a hit.“No, that was a hit, 1 thought itwas going foul but it stayed up, said Davis afterwards. “1 don’t want one of those Nolan Ryan no-hitters anyway.”The one-hitter was more than coach Alton Britt was asking for, telling Davis afterwards that he had thrown an exceptional game.“I wanted to let you go all the way if you felt like you had it,” said Britt. “That was a super job out there tonight, super.”Wilson added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth for the good measure.Wells got it going for Wilson again with a single, his third of the night. After the next two batters got out Smith singled and Lawhon walked to load the bases.Ricky Matthews hit a chopper to short which Joey Ross mishandled, allowing a run to score. Randy Deans then walked with the bases loaded and the-fifth Wilson run of the night crossed the plate.Wilson had a total of 11 hits and seven of those came from the top three batters. Weils had three, Simpson two and Williams two. Lawhon, batting fifth, also had two while Smith and Tim Parrish had the other two Wilson hits.Wilson will play its second division game at Fleming Stadium tonight at 8 p.m. against Goldsboro. Post 13 then travels to Washington for another conference game Saturday night at 8 p.m.Wilson’s defense was strong as Deans turned a doubleplay on a fly ball in the second, and Davis teammed with Matthews to pick a runner off at first in the seventh inning. Simpson.
