The baseball team will be chasing after the state crown.Coach Jim Massa's charges earned the Columbus trip with a pair ofwins in regional games played at West High Friday and Saturday. The Friday game was a one sided whitewash of an outclassed Dayton Wayne team, 12-0.Saturday's final was a rugged game against another tough team, Princeton, and the result was a 1-0 win for the Panthers.Both wins for Elder came behind outstanding mound work from theHENRY SIEVE PONTIAC1973 LEMANS 2 DR. 4 DR. In Friday’s game, Jim Eckstein toyed with the Waynemen, allowing only two harmless singles. He struck out eight and didn’t walk any as the game was a breeze after the first inning.Eckstein was also effective with the bat as were most of the Panthers. He banged out two of the 11 hits. Catcher Harry Tabler showed the reason for his fourth spot in the hitting order as he banged out three hits including a pair of long triples.The Miller twins were again a dominant factor as George hit the only home run of the game over the center field fence, and brother Henry had a pair of singles.Two other triples were hit by Gerry Vogele and Dan Johns. Mike Currin had a double.A SQUEAKER SATURDAYThe game on Saturday was in direct contrast to the Friday slug-fest. Elder made the one run it scored in the first inning hold up through the entire game and scored a one-zip win over the Vikings of Princeton'.Junior Bill Earley was a pitching master as he scattered six hits over the seven inning route.Elder was the visiting team and scored after two were qut in the first inning. Big Gerry Vogele, one of the members of the three great ‘‘fantastic fiftieth” teams of football, basketball and baseball got a hit. It wasn’t credited as one, but all 1500 spectators, except the official scorer, thought the ball which was hit inside the third base line was a hit all the way.There was no question about the next blow off the bat of catcher Harry Tabler. It was a rope which''LaixigsasPIZZERIARE-OPENSTHANKS FOR WAITING!i**was fielded by the right fielder, Steve Nagel.Henry Miller, the football quarterback, basketball guard and baseball star caught a Steve Acus fastball on the handle and dumped a humpback hit over second,Vogele wound up his 250 pound frame and dashed the 180 feet from second to home in near record time. The ace that was hung on the scoreboard was the only one of the day.Elder had one other scoring threat in the game. The bases were loaded in the third after a Terry McCarthy single, a walk, a force and another walk. This time Henry Miller couldn’t do the job and he went down oh strikes. It was later in the game he got a chance to be the hero and came through.SLICK SIXTHLead off batter for the Vikings in the sixth inning was infielder Guy Wright. He connected and hit a clean single to right center.He attempted a steal of second and was first called out. The umpire at second reversed his call when he ruled the ball wasn’t held long enough after the tag. Terry McCarthy was the Elder fielder on the play and in the opinion of most observers the first call was right.Given new life, Princeton became a threat. Earley struck out the next batter, but then came the key play of the game.HENRY THROWS STRIKEMark Reisenfeld, the left fielder of the Vikings, lined a shot to right center. Wright was running with the hit and rounded third on the way home.Henry Miller charged the ball in center field, picked it up, and fired toward the plate. Gerry Vogele had come in from his first base position and grabbed the throw firing in turn to third baseman Paul Nie-meyer.It worked. They caught Wright in a run down. The tag for the out was made by catcher Tabler well up the third base line.The big play was not the only drama of the inning, as the next batter dumped a little pop in back of first which was nailed by right fielder Dan Johns, after a long run, for the final out.Earley was again the master of the situation in the last inning after a lead off single and a passed ball put a runner in scoring position.He struck out the Princeton lead-off hitter and the next batter hit a weak roller to George Miller.SAFE THIS TIME as umpire rules Terry McCarthy, Elder shortstop, dropped the ball.
