Delweld, Galliker Dairy go late in nightcap of twin billIn the opening game of the season, and first of the doubleheader at Point Stadium yesterday, the Johnstown Grays outlasted Assure Home Equity and a stellar pitching performance from Justin Ronan. Ronan pitched six strong innings, allowing just one earned run, but was outdone by the Grays pitching trio of start Kip Watkins, Dave Holtz and Chris Minarcin.“Kip (Watkins) kept us in the game,” Grays manager Chris Pfeil said. “Ronin threw a tough game, but we knew if we hung in there, we could get to him eventually andthat’s what happened. Dave (Holtz) came into the game and got a big out for us as well.”Holtz came on for the Grays with runners at second and third for Assure Home Equity and the game tied at one in the top of the sixth inning. He got Josh Madison to strike out looking before giving way to Minarcin. who was in complete contrast to the off-speed pitching of Watkins and Holtz.“We can throw some different looks at you and that’s to our advantage. But I also thought that our defense played tremendously tonight and kept us in the game,” Pfiel said. The Grays took advantage of the strong relief pitching by posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Minarcin reached base via an error and came aroundi// 4 t0 score the winningjf//run on a Brandon 7lM*f DePhillip triple. SteveSiembak gave the Grays an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to knock in DePhillips and set the final score. Minarcin picked up the win in relieffor the Grays. Adam Miscik led the way offensively for the Grays with a pair of hits, while Assure got two hits from Mike Hermann.In the nightcap, stellar pitching was once again the name of the game with Delweld’s Brian Babik picking up the win in relief.Galliker’s starter Matt Bonin and Delweld starter Randy Dicken each struggled early, but settled into grooves and got out of jams to keep the score tied at one apiece.Dicken struck out nine in his five innings of work, while Bonin fanned 10, throwing seven-plus innings.
