The big item on the opening day’s agenda was the announcement of Dallas' selections from the expansion pool, and the Mavericks stuck to their game plan.“We wanted to go for youth whenever possible, with some veterans blended in for theirInsHurckin nnolifioc. Wi,.Lrsome solid players, with good fundamentals, from winning backgrounds, and those are the players we wanted. ’ ’The Mavericks resisted the temptation to pick some of the well-known players who were put up for grabs by the 22 existing teams, each of whom was permitted to protect eight men on its roster. Although the list was not made public, among those available were Rick Barry of Houston, Doug Collins of Philadelphia, Spencer Haywood of Los Angeles, Nate Archibald of Boston and Bobby Dandridge of Washington But the Mavericks shied away from players with big contracts or histories of injury or personal problems.“I think they put together a pretty good list, remarked New Jersey Nets General Manager Charlie Theokae. “They got some voune Dlavers who oughtWilson Post 13 Pushes Record To 7-0By TOM HAMThe Wilson American Legion nine continued its sizzling start and dispensed with preliminaries by rolling to a doubleheader sweep over sputtering Raleigh Post No. 1 by scores of 10-0 and 12-4 here in Fleming Stadium Wednesday evening.The ‘‘preliminaries,” of course, are the non-division outings and Post 13 gets down to the “serious business” of Area One, Eastern Division warfare by entertaining Williamston at 8 p.m. Thursday in Fleming Stadium. The Robert B. Anderson nine also hosts division rival Goldsboro at 8 p.m. Friday.Wilson rapped out 26 hits in the twinbill sweep and committed just three errors, all in the second game. Post 13 continued to benefit from effective pitching in boosting its record to a perfect seven wins and no losses. Raleigh dropped to 2-3.“I don’t know how strong the competition has been but I feel good about the results,” commented head coach Alton Britt following the twin triumphs.“The pitching has, by and large, been good and I didn’t realize we had 26 hits in tonight’s two games.”Britt announced that righthander Jeff Davis will draw the starting mound assignment in tonight’s Area One, Eastern Division debut.“After that, I don’t know,” he remarked, “we will just play it one game at the time.”Wilson was especially impressive in Wednesday night’s opener as right-handers Doug Godwin and Davis and southpaw Randy Prince combined to limit Raleigh to just two hits. The visitors had only one other baserunner and wound up leaving just one runner stranded.The trio of Donald Williams, Mack Smith and David Lawhon continued their torrid offensive work. In the opener, Williams slammed out three hits in four trips and drove in two runs. Smith added two hits in three trips and Lawhon belted a run-scoring double.Godwin permitted just one hit the first four frames and received credit for his second win without a loss. Prince retired all six batters he faced and Davis yielded a single in the 7th.Post 13 pushed across the only run it needed the bottom of thefirst off starter and loser Shane Gahagan when Williams singled with two out, stole second and tallied on Smith’s base knock.Wilson added an unearned run in the third and broke the contest open with five runs in the fourth as center-fielder Mike Wells slammed a run-scoring triple and Lawhon doubled Godwin and Prince singled in the uprising.The four-run fifth featured singles by Prince, Williams and Smith and third baseman Charles Simpson’s booming triple. Raleigh’s sloppy defensive play aided the Post 13 outbursts in the 4th and 5th.In the nightcap, Britt’s club trailed, 1-0 when Raleigh nicked starter and winner Charlie Flowers for a run in the top half of the first on three singles.Flowers then yielded an unearned marker in the third.However, Flowers, who worked the first three frames, still collected his second triumph as Wilson greeted Raleigh starter Steve Parker, a right-hander, roughly with a four-run outburst the bottom of the first.Wells reached on an error and Lawhon singled to open the frame. The Raleigh coach then elected to walk Williams intentionally — and suffered the consequences. Smith pounded a bases-loaded triple off the right-field wall and scored on an error.Lawhon wound up with a perfect three-for-three showing while Williams and Smith each rapped two hits. First baseman Ricky Matthews was a perfect two-for-two.Britt utilized 16 players in theopener and 18 in the second game. Right-handers Dewey Lashley and Richard Little followed Flowers to the hillWilson pushed across at least one run in every inning as Raleigh used four moundsmen.Britt was not certain the seven-game victory string was the longest during his tenure at the Post 13 helm but grinned. “I guess they start counting tomorrow (Thursday) night.“All of the teams in the division are going to be tough. Two of them are in the playoffs for State championships — enough said.
