A Man’s Beard Is His Own.The opinion of Pederai Judge J. M, Wool-sey in the ease of the House of David’s be-whiskered baseball team is a veritable Magna Charta of the beard. It appears that a group of athletic interlopers had turned out their beards and were touring the sand lots in House of David uniforms. The judge granted an injunction as to the name, holding it the property of the original men of Benton Harbor, Mich. But, scenting a plot beneath the shrubbery, he took pains to declare that “from time immemorial, beards have been in the public domain.”Shakespeare wrote that “he that hath no beard is less than a man.” Quite conceivably the present smooth-shaven generation might take that dictum to heart and turn beaver before frost, If it should find then that a judge had allowed the House of David to establish exclusive proprietary rights, popular fury would be hard to control. No, a man’s beard is his own, to dye, braid, or festoon as he chooses, as the House of David players do on their excursions into the Winona territory to play baseball.
