The June Term opens June 6th.*CITY NEWS.—A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Brady McDonald, yesterday, at 1013 North Central avenue.—Professor Ricker, of the High school, has secured President Hinitt, of Parsons College, to deliver the address on the occasion of the High school graduation exercises.Mr. E. T. Dankwardt returned from a several days’ business trip to Chicago and while there he purchased a car load of equipment for the new Madison Avenue Park of this city.—Burlington Council No. 568, Knights of Columbus, will initiate twenty candidates into the mysteries of the first and second degrees at Elks hall to-morrow night.—A trap shooting match will take place at Athletic Park on the afternoon of Decoration Day under the direction of Mr. J. F. Brettenstein. The first prize is the King's Smokeless Powder trophy and several other prizes will be aw’arded.— The Iowa district conference of the African M. E. church is in session in Ottumw'a. Rev. John W. Malone, presiding elder of the district, was present and presided as chairman of the conference. Rev. William Williams, of this city was present and read an interesting paper.—The matrimonial market experienced a boom in the past twro days. The following licenses to wred were issued: Oscar Peterson and Hulda Cling; August S. Stiller and Miss Anna Perrine; W. C. Brommer and Mary Ann Brown; John H. Ross and Laura Porter.—The Burlington Browns is the name of a colored base ball club ,recently organized. C. L. Smith, of No. 310 North Third street, is the manager and he says his aggregation of ball tossers are open to all engagements, and are good enough to make it interesting for their opponents. The following is the line up of the team: Catcher, P. Russell: pitcher, A. Brown; short stop, E. Febo; first base. E. Rose; second base, S. Carter: third base. Willie Monroe; right field. Win. Finley; center field, Ted Price; left field, E. Smith.—Water works bids will be oyened this evening by the city council. There are three propositions—one from Cleveland, one from Cincinnati and one from Chicago—the terms of which will not be known until this evening.•-Isaar Kelly was, last evening, awarded the garbage contract by the city council. Householders should see that their garbage cans are in good condition, provided with covers and placed in a convenient place for the garbage collector. Collections will be made at regular intervals and the people can greatly assist the health department in keeping the town in good sanitary condition, by complying with this suggestion.—Pitcher Wilson., of the Monmouth High school base ball club, met with a curious adventure last Saturday in this city. In the afternoon, it will be remembered, the Monmouth boys defeated the Burlington High school team in a game at Athletic Park. After the game the players proceeded to the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium. Wilson, who was not feeling well, laid on a couch in the reception room. This couch is located in an out of the way corner and in a few minutes the lad was asleep. His companions forgot about him until a fewr minutes before train time. A delegation was sent back to the gymnasium after Wilson, but as it was almost 11 o’clock the building was closed. However, a window’ wTas raised and sure enough Wilson was found sleeping the healthy sleep of tired youth and no doubt dreaming of striking out every man that came to the bat.—The newr street car company is ready to commence work Monday morning on one line to West Burlington by the way of Sunnyside avenue. They intend to build another line by way of Agency and Mt. Pleasant streets as soon as the rights of way can be secured and an azreement reached between the city, the Burlington road and their own company for the construction of a large viaduct for teams, passengers and street cars over the Burlington tracks south of Osborn street. This will take some little time and negotiations, but must inevitably come. It is up to the council to grant this permit to-night. There may be some excuse for Aldermen Murphy and Burhans opposing this route, because they want their constituents served first, but what excuse any other aiuerman can have for voting against this route it is difficult to see.
