RICHARD LITTLEWinning PitcherPost 13 Remains Undefeated, 5-4By RUSSELL RAWLINGSSMITHFIELD - Nelson Daniels came within 45 feet of tying the Johnston County-Wilson game Monday night.And in this case 45 feet was a long way, because Daniels was i about 45 feet away from home and 45 feet away from third when Wilson’s Donald Williams put the tag on him to complete a rundown and save a 5-4 win for Wilson.It was a play which really shouldn’t have happened, but Daniels thought he had a shot at making home after his two-out, ninth inning triple brought in a pair of runs and cut the Wilson lead to one Mack Smith got the ball at home in plenty of time and Daniels turned back for third. Smith fired to Williams, who chased Daniels about halfway home before putting the game-ending tag on him.American Legion Post 13 led 5-2 for most of the night but Johnston County finally got to reliever Dewey Lashley in the ninth after the Wilson righthander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.Shawn Moore opened the ninth for Johnston County with a single, followed by a Mack McLamb grounder to third. Williams fielded the grounder and fired to Randy Deans at second. Deans thought he had the runner at second and fired to first.The man at second was ruledsafe and so was the man at first. Chuck Gregory then filed out and Scott Parrish grounded to third for a force and two outs. That brought Daniels to the plate.The shot to right-center was trouble from the very beginning but Eric Ferrell ran the ball down and got it into the infield before Daniels could tie the game.The loss leaves Johnston County with an 0-2 record. They’ll have a good team in Smithfield before the summer is over.Apparently they’ve already got a good team in Wilson. With two out, Smith came through at the plate with a two-run single.Jeff Davis was the second Wilson pitcher, working thefifth, sixth and seventh innings Davis left the bases loaded in the seventh but had little trouble in the fifth and sixth.
