PatSullivanSilverberg eagerCaLethbridge's 1976 golf season musl be officially under way delt; now, the Chinook Classic is history. forIt would certainly be nice if a Lethbridge golfer were to show his heels to the rest and win the low gross honors. * ha1 However, things are looking up. Lloyd Kanewlscher and CA Cliff Stroh, two of Henderson Lake’s better shotmakers, made things a little rough for eventual winner Doug Silverberg of Mt Calgary. fnlI had never really met Silverberg before. I had a chance to Chat with him briefly just prior to the presentation of the priies Monday at Henderson:I’m not sure it was a warning to the rest of Alberta’s amateur golfers or not but he did assure me he was planning to play a lot more golf thi$ year.I haven’t played too much golf the last two or three years,” he said. It has been a combination of my job, family and a slight neck problem.“My doctor says I can play golf — and play he did this past weekend with a 6S, 70 and 74 - so that pleases me.“I don't feel as comfortable in cold weather as I used to. I used to like it when it was cool. I seemed to play some of my better golf when the temperature dropped a little.“Now, however, my bands tend to get a little numb when [ gel cold. But I’m not using that as an excuse. I'll be just fine. You watch and see.”Silverberg indicated that this could be a good year for him.' 'I'm playing what l.feel is the best golf I have in some lime this early in the year.“I have been 20 years with my company and I feel I'm in a position now where I can take a little more time to concentrate on my game. *“I’m eager this year and I have to be eager. I have to get enthused and excited to play my best golf. I haven't done that for a couple of seasons.I will play in the Canadian amateur championships this year. 1 plan to take a couple of weeks off and concentrate on the' amateur — an added incentive is the fact the Canadian championships are at Royal Callwood in Victoria and Silverberg's parents live there.”Silverberg, who once appeared to me a menacing figure on a golf course with his serious look and determined walk, has changed his style. * .He is still a personable competitor but even more colorful and. If possible, cool. And besides all of that, he is eager. While Silverberg was busy winning the top honors at the Chinook Classic, club professional at Henderson, Kevin Hunter, was getting his baptism of fire.' 'I enjoyed it very much ” he said Wednesday. “It took a little longer to organise than I expected but it was .very enjoyable and educational.“1 can’t thank Nobby Dzuren and Bill Sinclair enough. They were just super. They helped me tremendously. i“In Calgary- — where he was assistant pro at Canyon Meadows — it would have taken 10 or 15 people to organize □ tournament with over 2C0 entries. I’m proud of the job we did here.”You won’t get any argument from this comer.Gregg Pilling, formerly of Lethbridge but now, it would seem, a resident of Philadelphia, was selected general manager of the year in the North American Hockey League.Pilling, one of the candidates for coach of the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association last fall, was G. M. of the Philadelphia Firebirds this last season and reports are the parent Flyers are very high on the young man from the 'Bridge.Another Lethbridgeite who is doing weilfor himself is Marty Maxwell. A student at Washington State University, Marty, and five of his team-mates, were named to the 12-man all-Northem Division all-star squad at third base. The Henderson Lake Tennis Club is hoping the weatherman will co-operate and slow down the breezes. The club has not yet reached full stride because of the wind conditions but club professional Mike McUveen must know something we don't.Mike plans to begin tennis lessons for those interested Monday and hopes the winds will have run out of steam. As a service — a play with words — to readers of The Lethbridge Herald, Rod Laver will be a regular feature on the sports pages three times weekly.1 don’t see how tennis buffs can go wrong with a partnership like Laver and Mcllveen, do you?
