(CT) — Earl Dawson, Canadian Amateur Hockey AssiN'iation pres-Went, says the CAHA decision to re-enter some areas of international com petition w a s made because we now feel our policy was a negative one and it was time to review the standand begin bargaining.The association gave unanimous approval Wednesday to a motion to get back into international competition at all levels oilier limn world and Olympic championships.Canada pulled out of all inler-national hockey competition in January, 1970, when the Inter-I national Ice Hockey Federation ! reversed ils decision to allow Canada to use professional pluycrs.The CAHA stand was lhal there would be no exchange of teams between Europe and Canada until the Canadian team was allowed to use professionals in world competition.Djwsoii told the plenary session of the CAI1A annual meeting the as.soei at Ion’s stand was not a negative policy at first but had become lhal way because wc bad made our point.Now we have to be sure we’re not hurling our friends overseas and we have to starl bargaining with some of theEuropean countries for their support when it comes time next year to again discuss Canada’s proposals to use any Canadian players in world competition.Gordon Juckes, CAHA executive director, said the Europeans feelwe’vetaken a goodstand and we shouldn't be discouraged because v° »*nuldnT achieve all our objectives in the lirst year.Both Dawson and Juckes said the general feeling in Canada was that the CAHA should rc-cnlcr international competition at all levels below that of the national team.The decision reaffirmed Dawson’s statement earlier this week that Canada will not compete In the Jy 12 Olympic hockeytournament in Sapporo, Japan.CAHA past president Fred Fage of Vancouver said the Eu-r u p c a n s have suggested a Christmas tournament with the Canadian senior hockey champion, the Ahcnrnc Cup champi-lon and a team from the U.S.Dawson said the CAHA now must sift the invitations for minor competitions against our friends in Europe. He said the association would have to make a decision on whether the 1971 Allan Cup champion Galt Hornets would be permitted to ienter the suggested tournament.
