Pampans Take Time Off To Put Final Touches on Celebration* * *(Special to The Sunday News-Cilnhe)PAMPA, May 26. Pampans, busier than at any time during the past three years, on account of renewed oil activity, took time off last week to put the finishing touches on their Pre-Centennial Celebration and Pioneers Roundup, which they will stage May 31 and June 1.A huge stack of letters was proot to the pre-centennial committees that the first celebration in Texas of the events preceding San Jacinto has been taken well by citizens all over the Panhandle. Because these letters indicate a large crowd of visitors will be here for the celebration, careful plans have been made for their entertainment.Allred To SpeakThe Pre-Centennial Celebration will get under way at 11 o'clock on the morning of May 31 when James V. Allred, attorney general of Texas, will open the patriotic fete in city^ ^ ^auditorium. That afternoon at 'l o’clock will be held the Pre-Centen-nial parade. This will include the following floats; two missions, the Alamo and San Francisco de la Espada; Mission San Francisco de los Tejas. the first church in Texas; Coronado’s dream of the Gran Quivira, a golden city of Cibola; Coronado’s “dream come true”; the Mother of Texas, Mrs. James Long; Texas under six flags; LaFitte on Galveston Island; origin of the name “Texas”; the first marriage in Texas; surrender of Santa Anna at San Jacinto; burial of La Salle In East Texas; the fate of Nolan’s men; Stephen F. Austin in his Mexico City dungeon, and de Pinedo, the first white man in Texas.Three Pioneer Roundup programs will be held—one after the parade, one the next morning, and one the next afternoon. An old fiddlers’ contest and square dance will be held for old timers the first night. The grand march will be held at 10 o’clock, followed by the Virginia reel.Hamlin TalkerOne of the speakers who will address old timers on the second day is Judge James D, Hamlin of Far-well, president of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce and pioneer XIT ranch attorney. Local committee chairmen are as follows: Mrs. Claude Ledrick, rooms; Mrs. De Lea Vicars, registration; Mrs. W. R. Ewing, hostesses; Mrs. E. A. Shack-leton. information. A separate building will be available for old timers.Athletic features of the celebration will comprise a baseball game he-¥ * *tween the Pampa Roadrunners and the House of David, June 1; a championship prize fight between Ralpn Chong of Houston and Duke Trammel of Fort Worth; a donkey baseball game on the first afternoon.14 Historical Moments The Pre-Centennial Pageant, depicting 14 important moments in Texas history, will be presented in the natural theater in Central Park on the second evening. A cast of 150 persons clad in historically correct costumes will also march in the parade, which will be headed by Coronado and his army, all in armour and mounted as they appeared when they rode across the Panhandle in the sixteenth century. La Salle and his company, Jean La Fitte and his pirates, Santa Anna, Sam Houston, the Texas army of 1836, Stephen F. Austin, St. Denis, De Leon, Father Massanet, de Pinedo, and other historical personages, all in costume, will march or ride in the parade.
