Mack Smith singled to lead off for Wilson in the bottom of the seventh before the heavy rain started.Moments later, as the rain continued on an already soggy Fleming field, plate umpire Bill Price officially called the game.The win, and especially the nohitter, brought to a close an excellent opening weekend ofbaseball for coach Alton Britt, assistant coach Will Flowers, and the entire American Legion team.Wilson is off to its best start in years with four wins in as many games Post 13 opened with a win at North Raleigh Friday night, added two more wins over North Raleigh at Fleming Saturday night (see story below) and finished with an easy win over Johnston County.This was the opening game for Johnston County South Johnston was just eliminated from the State 3-A Playoffs Fri day night while North Johnston, another feeder for this legion team, is still alive in the 2-A playoffs.Wilson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, added another run in the third, and then broke things open with fivein the bottom of the sixthMike Weils singled to lead off the first for Wilson. Charles Simpson followed with a shot to center which Nelson Daniels chased down just enough to get a good glove on it before missing the ball. Wells moved to third and scored on an error whereas Simpson scored on a sacrifice fly by SmithSmith opened the sixth with a double. Lawhon followed with a single before Ricky Matthews reached on an error. The ball was a bunt to the mound which would have otherwise been a sacrifice for Matthews, seven for 10 coming into this game.Jim Barnes followed with a walk to score Smith Randy Deans reached on an error which scored Lawhon and Matthews Wade Farmer's pinch-hitWilson Legion Sweeps Past North Raleigh With Doubleheader Victory Saturday NightBy TRIP PURCELLWilson’s American Legion baseball team beat North Raleigh for the second and third times in about 24 hours Saturday night by sweeping a nonconference doubleheader in Fleming Stadium.Five Post 13 pitchers held North Raleigh to just six hits, two runs and no earned runs in the two seven-inning games Wilson won the first game 3-1 and the second one 6-1.Meanwhile, Post 13 wasn’t as productive at the plate as coach Alton Britt might have liked, but nevertheless managed enough hits to give the strong pitching and defense some help.In the first game. North Raleigh pitcher Donnie Walker had control of the game through four innings. And in the top of the fourth, his teammates got him a 1-0 lead off Wilson starter Randy Prince.The first two batters walked that inning and with one away, a run scored on an error. Charles Flowers relieved Prince at that point, ending the inning on two strikeouts.Flowers ended up with the win as in the bottom of the fifth Wilson scored two runs. Eric Ferrell got it started with a single. Pinch hitter Tim Parrish reached on an error, moving Ferrell to third. A Mike Wellsgrounder scored Ferrell, and Charles Simpson followed with a run-scoring double.In the sixth, David Lawhon singled, took second on an error, third on a wild pitch and scored on a Ricky Matthews single.Wilson’s Jeff Davis got a save by pitching the last two innings and allowing just one baserun-Fike Banquet On TuesdayThe Fike spring sports banquet — originally scheduled for Wednesday — has been moved to Tuesday, May 27.
