CAHA/govREGINA (CP) — The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association annual con-volition ended Thursday—the same way it began last weekend—with president Gordon Renwick voicing his concern over government intrusion.Renwick told a closing news conference a position paper given to his organization this week by cabinet minister Iona Campagnolo lends weight to his concern that the government wants to extend its control over Canadian hockey. He said the federal sports and physical fitness minister has made it clear she is not paying attention to the CAHA position that Hockey Canada should restrict its involvement to professional hockey. The position paper, outlining Canada's hockey plans through 1984, says Allan Eagleson, a Toronto lawyer and agent who is head of the National Hockey Leagueat loggerheads over puck controlPlayers’ Association, will act as sole negotiator for Canada in all international professional agreements. The CAHA will negotiate amateur agreements after possible conflicts havebeen cleared through Hockey Canada.Renwick said his organization also is disturbed that Hockey Canada has been placed in charge of the Olympic program. He said the government-backed body should concentrate on bringing the NHL and World Hockey Association into cooperation.Although the CAHA approves the concept outlined for preparation of a Canadian amateur team for the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid, N.Y., Renwick said the national hockey organization feels it should have been put in charge rather than Hockey Canada.“We feel the (Olympic) committeecould he a ( AHA committee rather than a Hockey Canada committee inasmuch as most of the people involved are affiliated with the CAHA.” .Delegates learned this week that Hockey Canada will be given $500,000 in two years to handle the Olympic program and $42,000 to produce a Canadian entry for the world junior championship next season in Stockholm. The CAHA blames Hockey Canada for a $100,000 loss in the world junior tournament in Canada in the season just concluded.Renwick said it is hoped that WHA and NHL organizations will play exhibition games with the Olympic team and that professional teams will encourage some juniors to remain amateur until after the Olympics.Players who did not turn pro would be paid by Game Plan, another government-backed organization, during preparations for the Olympics.A final-day directors’ meeting approved in principle a plan to hire a fulltime chairman of the board because the work load has grown too much for a volunteer president. It also agreed Larry Skinner, marketing and media relations director, needs an assistant.Renwick announced Prince George Mohawks, 1978 Canadian intermediatechampions, will play six exhibition games in Japan next February. Two games in Seoul, South Korea, the first in Canadian history, also were possible. He said the Japanese national team probably would play at Prince George in 1980 en route to the Olympics.
