Edmonds race driver killed in accident Sun.ballRichard Dick Bray, 33, of Edmonds was killed Sundayafternoon at Evergreen Speedway, Monroe, when his 1961 Mercury hit the fence, rolled and burned in front of the grandstand.Bray, an eight-year veteran of stock car racing, was in second place on the I4th lap of the 50-lap Super Stock main event at Evergreen, It was the first fatality in the history of the track, since 1964 the largest paved oval track on the West Coast.An acoustical-tile installer, Bray lived at 23101 — 84th Avenue West, Edmonds, with his wife, Barbara, and four children, three sons and one daughter, all of pre-school age.The car, driven by Mel Reynolds to the 1965 Washington .Early Late Stock Car Association point championship, was owned Carl Wegener of Kirkland,According to race observers, Bray's car, headed down the main straightaway into the south turn, swerved into the grandstand protective fence, bounced atop a following vehicle, then skidded, upside down, along the track before bursting intoDespite prompt action bytrack safety personnel, andnear-immediate arrival of ad-ditional fire equipment from thecity of Monroe, nothing could be done.Don Walker, driving a 1961 Ford, was ruled winner of the main event, stopped following the tragic accident.
