Nixes RoxburghRejectionOlympicsOTTAWA lt;CP) - Canadas Olympic hockey team will he named in August by officers of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.Delegates to the final session of the CAHA's annual meeting left the decision to their officers Thursday after rejecting President Jack Roxburgh's motion not to send a team to the 1964 games.Roxburgh argued that because Canada pays an allowance to its players to compensate for salary losses, it violates the Olympic oath. He said the oath forbids players from taking any money.He said Canada thus is winking its eye at the oath and setting a bad example to the country’s youth.Delegates from Thunder Ba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Ottawa districts voted against his motion. Quebec and Ontario districts supported it while the Maritimes and Manitoba did notvote.Bob LeBel, ( AHA past-presi-dent and president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, said the International OlympicCommittee has given the IIHF the authority to decide what countries are eligible to enter hockey teams.DENES OATH VIOLATEDAnd because the IIHF permits the payment of an allowance. Canada does not violate the Olympic oath when it sends teams -LeBel suggested that because Trail Smoke Eaters are Allan Cup champions, the Olympic trip should be offered to them. Delegates have already approved Smokies for the world hockey tournament in 1963, but LeBel said Trail might he willing to forego this trip in favor of the Olympics.An application from SaskatoonQuakers of the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League for an overseas trip is al o to be considered.In annual elections, 52 year-old Art Potter of Kdmonton was named to succeed Roxburgh. Lionel Fleury of Quebec City is the new first vice-president and Fred Page of Fort William was named second vice-president.Delegates approved April 21 as the starting date for the Allan Cup finals to he playedin Eastern Canada next season. The Memorial Cup finals, to be played in Western Canada, oplt; April 27.They also decided to return to Ottawa for their 50th annual, meeting in 1964.
