(AP) — Ever though the United States isn’t sen ding a basketball team to the 198( Olympics in Moscow, the IS members of the squad named Frida will get a chance to prove they car play.Between June 16 and 29, the team will play five games against National Basketball Association All-Star teams and one game against the gold medal-winning 1976 U.S. Olympic team.The 1980 team was announced by the U.S. Olympic Committee and the American Basketball Association after five days of workouts and a k n e e-s k i n n i n g exhibition tripleheader Thursday night. It includes three college sophomores — Sam Bowie of Kentucky, Rodney McCray of I^ouisville and Isiah Thomas of Indiana.The remainder of the team is made up of All-American Mark Aguirre ofDe Paul, Michael Brooks of I^aSalle, Bill Hanzlik of Notre Dame, Darnell Valentine of Kansas, Alton Lister of Arizona State, Rolando Blackman of Kansas State, A1 Wood of North Carolina, Danny Vranes of Utah and Buck Wiliams of Maryland.The 14-member selection committee was headed by North Carolina Coach Dean Smith. The committee included 10 head coaches and two former coaches.“Coach (Dave) Gavitt told us the makeup of the team he wanted — how many guards, how many forwards, how many centers,” Smith said before the selections were announced.“This is the same group that selected our Pan American Games team last year. There used to be a lot of politics involved, but now it’s mostly coaches doing the choosing. I think it’s better this way.”
