The Princeton Tiger won the 12-team, Region 5 Golf Tourn ment held at Pipestein State Park Monday with a team score of 311. Greenbrier East finished in second place with a total of 318, and now the Tigers and the East team will travel to Glade Springs in Beckley for the state golf tournament on Tuesday, May 31. Medalist for the regional event was Princeton’s Johnny Snidow, who shot a one-over par 73. Steve Neal of Bluefield and Princeton’s Tom West each shot a 75 for a share of the second medalist, and then West won a playoff to also win a spot for the state event. Princeton’s individual scorers were Johnny Snidow with a 73, Tom West with a 75, Rick White with an 80, and Bryan Wetzell with an 83 for the team total of 311. Tiger Tom Moorefield shot an 84, but that score did not count in Prin ceton’s final tabulations. Tiger golf coach Ralph Ball commented on his teams play, “The boys picked the right time to play their best game. We just played the best round of the year. Snidow and West have been consistently shooting in the 70’s and the others have been in the 80’s. Most of them had a pretty good round.” Concerning Princeton's trip to the state event, the head coach observed, ‘‘The kids know we have a good op portunity to win. After you qualify, everyone that gets up there has a shot at it.” Prin ceton’s previous best finish in the West Virginia Golf Tour nament was sixth. Other teams scores in the regional event were Beckley and Bluefield tied for third with 323’s, Madison Scott in fifth place with a 341, Richwood and Shady Springs deadlocked in 6th position with 352’s, followed by Athens 354, Mullens 358, Independence 381, Mt. Hope 397, and Man was disqualified. Bluefield’s individual scorers were Steve Neal 75, Jeff Cop pinger 81, Jimmy Funari 83, and Bill Blue 84. Athens’ in dividual marks were made by Woody Ball 82, Jim Edens 88, Tom Lamb 92, Chris Nash 92, and Mullens’ Mike Muscari 80, Mack Wilson 84, Eddie Mullins 92, and Tim Morton 102.
