-CHESSBeginner's Corner — hint explanation: Finish with the pawn.BEGINNER S CORNER8b c d e f 9 hWHITE MATES IN 3By Shelby ly manBasic CAess FeaturesIn the United States chess is rarely treated as a sport by the printed media. Notable exceptions are Sports Illustrated which periodically gives chess major coverage and USA Today which publishes chess results in its sports section. In much of the rest of the chess-playing world outside of the U.S., the sports departments of papers and magazines routinely handle chess news and chess columns. In these countries chess players—though not athletes in the usual meaning of the term —are as a matter of course referred to as sportsmen. It was not uncommon in the former Soviet Union for top grandmasters to appear on lists of the 10 best “sportsmen of the year.”Of course chess players do not depend on size, musculature, or speed for success. But like other sportsmen, they contend, battle, and struggle with each other for supremacy.Russians are fond of referring to a chess game as a “sport or debate. But don't get the idea that chess is merely a mental phenomenon. The level of physical excitation, stress, and expenditure of energy in chess is comparable to other sports. Are other games such as bridge, poker, backgammon, and checkers also sports? I think they probably are, or at the very least have a significant sporting component. In 1972, the year he became world champion, Bobby Fisch- er — who has a keen interest in sports — offered the following analogy to sportswriter Ira Berkow:“I'd compare chess to basketball. Basketball players pass the ball around until they get an opening. Like chess, like the mating attack.“You've got to be in top condition to play chess.Below is a win by 22-year-old Michael Adams of England — currently rated 20th in the world — over Joseph Ryan of Ireland from the recent British Zonal Tournament held in Dublin.Ryan1.Adamse4IdS2.exd5Qxd53.Nc3Qa54.Nf3Nf65.d4Bf56.Ne5c67.Bf4e68.g4Be49.Nc4Qd810.Nxe4Nxe411.Qf3Nf612.0-0-0h513.Qd514.Qb3b515.gxf6Qxhl16.fxg7Bxg717.Qg3Bh618.Bxh6Rxh619.Ne5Qd520.Qg8chKe721.Qxf7chKd622.c4Black resigns.SOLVE ITAFTE* 1S...Rxh6Solution to Beginner's Corner: 1.
