By FRED KAVELAKProgress Sports EditorCLARION - Vickie Smith hurled the javelin farther than last year’s state champion, exploded down the stretch for an unbelievablecome-from-behind win in the 880-yard run and capped a brilliant individual performance by anchoring the victorious mile relay quartetafter picking up points with the fourth place 880 medley relay unit.Kim Kelly flew through the air to take the triple jump and long jump before switching over to the track to run a strong leg in the mile relay. Another superb individual effort.Jcndi Wood rose to the occasion on the final throw to the discus after losing the lead only seconds earlier. She placed third in the shotput and javelin.Marie Morgan, like Smith in the javelin, remained unbeaten for the season by uncorking another excellent heave in the shot pul.Patti Duckett had little trouble claiming first place in the high jump after taking a third in the long jump.Celesta Koval, who was third in the 440, and Karen Roseberry were the baton carriers with Kelly and Smith in the mile relay. That’s eight firsts, if you’re keeping track, for the Clearfield Area High thin* clads in the first District 9 Girls Class AAA Track and Field Meet Saturday at Clarion State College. All except Smith in the 880 and Duckett in the high jump were record-setters, since only a couple of the standards set in the first two District 9 Girls Championships were owned by competitors from AAA schools.Brenda Condon just missed adding another gold medal to the Bisonettes’ loot when she was edged in the 110 hurdles after posting the best time in the trials. She had the same time as winner Cindy Butters of Bradford at 17.1, which is a record.Condon, Morgan and Duckett teamed with Smith in the 880 medley relay to pickup fourth place points. However, even though the field events were a showcase for Coach Rod Rishel’s Bisonettes and they managed to do well in some of the races, they wound up a distant second to Bradford in the team chase, accumulating 70 points to the Owlettes* 92.One major factor was that Clearfield got only three points from standout distance runner Grace Feasler, who pulled up 220 yards from the finish of the two-mile run because of what was later diagnosed as a “stress fracture” of her leg.Encouraged by her teammates, the tall Bisonette junior hobbled, walked and limped to the finish line to get a third.“A profile in courage,” is what Rishel later said in praising Feasler when he learned she had to have herentire leg encased by a cast.Feasler was right with front-runner Suzie Maruca of Punxsy at the time she simply had to slop running because of the pain and was a heavy favorite in the mile.‘‘What she did Saturday is almost beyond belief,” Rishel added in admiration.Smith, improving her distances almost every lime out in recent meets, arched the javelin 134’ U” to win the district title by 30 feet, andthat puts her in line for a shot at placing extremely high in the state championships.“If I’m not mistaken, she’s about two feet off the state record,” Rishel pointed out. “The winning throw last year was 133’ in less than ideal conditions, 1 think it looks very promising for her to do well in the states. I’m talking top five. She’,s gotta be one of the favorites.”What Smith did in the 880 almost defies description. Coming around the final turn, she trailed Kim Thorton of Bradford by at least 15 yards and Sandy Duperree of Punxsy by about half that.“With 220 yards to go, she looked like she might be too far back for second,” said Rishel, “but she’s just a super competitor and a smart athlete. She just knows what she can do and will do to win. She’s a winner. She began her kick as she came out of the last turn and came up so fast on the leaders that neither knew she was there. Thornton actually thought she was coasting tovictory when Smith nipped her right at the finish line. A super race.“I have to believe if the girl had led her by 20 yards, Vickie still would have beaten her,” added Rishel. “That’s the way she is.”Smith’s time was 2:30.5.In the mile relay, Koval and Roseberry stayed with the Bradford runners, and Kelly gave Smith a good lead, but Thornton went out fast on the final 440 and overtook the Bisonette on the backstretch.Again, Smith exhibited her burning desire to win when she used her stronger kick to get to the finish line first. The Bisonettes’ time was 4:20, a full seven seconds faster than the previous week.Morgan, who had to settle for second place behind Bradford’s Kathy Mut-zabaugh last year, got even with the Owlette in the shot put with a heave of 377.25”.Wood led the discus after the second throw, but Janell Johnston of Bradford uncorked a better one on her last attempt. With only one try to go, the Clearfield junior was equal to the challenge as she whirled and spun the disc105’5”.Kelly was the favorite in the triple jump, and she responded with an effort of 32’3.75” but her victory in the long jump was a surprise. She didn’t begin competing in that event until the middle of the season and had never gone beyond 14T0”. She hit one good for 15*6.75 Saturday.“Kim does it through hard work and a great attitude. She just did a tremendous job for us,” Rishel said.Duckett won the high jump in quick fashion as most of the competition dropped out early and she was the only girl to clear 4’10”.“Morgan, Duckett, and Wood did nice Jobs, too,” Rishel added. “Morgan hasn’t been beaten, Duckett didn’t lose in dual meets and Wood lost only once In duals and that was to Grace (Feasler). Wood has really come a long way for her first year.”Rishel, disappointed for Feasler, was ecstatic about the over-ali show staged by his Bisonettes.“I’ve gotta give them a lot of credit. It becomes very depressing to work out on a parking lot every day. That’s not just the girls, either. The boys, too, have to practice on the parking lot.“These girls just had tremendous team spirit and really pulled together, even more when they saw what happened to Grace.“I guess the one event that summed it all up was the mile relay. Those four girls just put everything they had into it and the rest of the girls were really rooting for them.”Smith, Kelly, Morgan, Duckett, Wood, Condon, Koval and Roseberry will be going to Shippensburg State this week* for the PIAA Girls Class AAA Championships.DISTRICT 9 GIRLS CLASS AAA Team Scoring and Keyt. He’ll have to do better than that at the states in order to do well.”Strickland, unbeaten induals in the high hurdles, avenged his Big Three Meet loss to Clever in convincing fashion, hitting the finish line in 15.9. The DuBois hurdler was a half-second behind.Davis had the shot put won until Punxsutawney’s Frank Bizousky stepped into the ring for his last heave. The Chuck got off one of 50’11.25”.Davis, who also took a third in the javelin, had held the lead with an effort good for497”.“Joe’s really coming on and we were pleased with him,” Butler said. “Bill Short works with him pretty close, and Joe added two feet to his personal best on Saturday.”Clearfield’s other point-getters were soph Cliff Dixon,/ •a third in the intermediate hurdles; Scott Carlson, Fourth in the discus; Mark Price, fourth in the 440; Dennis Owens, fifth in the mile and 880; Dan Wallace, fifth in the two-mile run, and two relay teams. Strickland, Carlson, Gary Mitchell and Robert Vaughn were third in the 880 while Owens, Price, Mitchell and Strickland were fourth In the mile.As expected, Punx-sutawney had a shambles ofthe team competition with 97 points to St. Marys’ 49, DuBois’ 46, Brookville’s 43, Clearfield’s 35, Bradford’s 13 and DuBois Central’s 4,Butler was hoping for more points from his Bisons.‘‘Saturday was discouraging for me,” heiOVER LAST HURDLE goes Randy Strickland af Clearfield enroute to a 15.9 clocking In the 120 htghs as DuBois' Jay Clever, left, and St. Marys' Scott Lipsey, right, trail.
