DuBois, Pa.—Serving Clearfield, Jefferson and Elk County Area— Monday, May 23, 1977By BANTLEY MYERSC-E Sports WriterCLARION — DuBois Area High School's hoy’s track and field team wound up their 1977 season with a third place finish in the District 9 competition Saturday at ( larion State College's field while the DuBois Area girls were fourth best in the tripleA meet.Brian Foust with a pair of firsts in the long and triple jump, Eric Lundgren in the pole vault with a school tying leap of 12-1 and Paul Hoover’s thrilling 880 yard winning run were the highlights in another wise dismal day for the DuBois Area team.The Beaverettes came through with five school records intheir second year on the track and field grind. Six of the girls will jourey to Shippensburg this week for the PIAA finals as they finished second to make the big state meet.Punxsutawney as expected, ran away with the Class AAA Boys' title as they piled up 98 points to runnerup St. Marys 49. DuBois Area had 46, Brookville 45, Clearfield 35, Bradford 13 and DuBois Central Christian got four points on Mark Madere’s second place inthe mile run.On the girls side of the AAA class, it was Bradford by 20 points over surprising Clearfield while Punxsy came up a distant third tobeat out DuBois Area by 9 or so points and St. Marys was last.The AA Boys had some of the best competition of the long, hot day as Kane took the team title by 27 points over Clarion. The AA boys set three new records.The Kane gals made it a sweep as they edged Elk County Christian by five points for the AA Girls’ title. Brookville was a strong fourth and with a bit of help in two relays would have been third. Ridgway was down in 11th.Boys AAANo new records in this class as the six full teams entered just didn’t have theoutstanding boys this year. Several of the marks turned in for winning performances wouldn't have rated a glance in the AAs to disprove the adage, the higher the classification, the better the grades.Eric Lundgren tied a DuBois Area pole vault record with a leap of 12-1 and won by having fewer misses as two others had the sameheight.Brian Foust won the triple jump with a strong effort but he had to go directly into the long jump and didn’t have enough left to set any records. Foust won the long jump with a sub 20 foot leap.Paul Hoover was a step better than Punxsy’s Jim Sisk in the 880-yard run to bring home DuBois Area’slt;Eric Lundgren soars over the pole vault standards on his way to first in that event. Hoover took command early and held off Sisk’s final surge for aBeaver win.Chris Hitchings took a second in the javelin and Jay Clever was good for a secondin the 330 yard hurdles andthe 120 high hurdles for 12 more Beaver points.Other DuBois Area point getters were Mark Davidson in the 330 hurdles, Jim Pompeii in the 110 yard dash and triple jump, Steve Kane in the shot and the two mile relay team with a third place showing.CLASS AAA GIRLSSchool records were set by the Beaverettes’ Kathy Shaffer in the 110 hurdles, Paula Phillips in the Long jump, Annette DeLarme in the 220 yard dash, Deb Gallagher in the triple jump and the 440 yard relayers of DeLarme, Shelly Grinnen, Sue Petrucci and Jeanette Kaufmann,Adding points for DuBois Area were Grace Wray with a second in the high jump, Phillips in the long jump and javelin, Grinnen and Kaufmann in the 110 yard dash, and the 880 medley relayers of Kaufmann. Grinnen, Petrucci and Wray.Three records were broken in the AAAs, in the shot, javelin and discus while the girls dropped two old events and added four new ones.CLASS AA BOYSMike Hartle of Clarion and his teammate. Kurt Lehnortt. broke the oldjavelin record of 209' by tossing the spear 219-2 and 215 3 respectively. Big George O’Malley got off a 56 4 shot put and Kane’s 880 yard relay team ran the distance in 1:33.5 for new records while Rod Lyon of Cameron Co. legged it over the 120 yard high hurldes totie the existing mark of 14.7.Perry Maze of Kane was a triple winner as he outran the 100-yard and 220 yard sprinters besides being on the record setting 880 relay team. Overall, Kane won seven events in taking the team trophy for District 9 supremacy.Mark Donachy of Clarionwas another triple winner ashe took the mile run and anchored the winning 2 mile and mile relay teams.George O’Malley took the shot and discus as planned and a shot of 60' was disallowed when George stepped out of the circle.CLASS AA GIRLSMolly Bauer of Elk County Christian chalked up a pair of firsts and seconds in leading her team to second place behind powerful Kane. Wins in the 110-hurdles and 440 relay and seconds in the 220 yard dash and 880 medleyrelay gave the Elk Countyteam half their points.Brookville had two winners in Peggy Daugherty for the mile run and Lisa Thompson in the two-mile run. The Lady Raiders of Brool.ville had two third places, a fourth and two fifths for their 22 points.LAWRENCE TOP WINNERMargaret Lawrence of Bradford was the day’s top winner as she won all threesprints, the 100, 220 and 440,plus anchoring the Owlettes 440 yard relay team to victory.
