Fleury is new CAHA presidentOTTAWA (CP) - Lionel Fleury, 52, a Quebec City civil servant, Friday was elected president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.flis election was quickly followed by an Ontario delegate’s plea to the CAHA's annual meeting here for “full co oper' ation for our French-Car. ad a president.”George Panter of Graven-hurst, Ont., said Mr. Fleury would need the goodwill of all CAHA branches in his new post. There would be pressure put on him to favor Quebec in all disputes “and we in turn expect him to be fair to all.”Election of officers was the final piece of business considered by the golden jubilee meeting which began last Monday.Other officers named were Fred Page of Fort William, Ont., first vice-president, and Lloyd Pollock of Windsor, Ont., second vice-president.Retiring president Art Potter of Edmonton got a big ovation when he stepped down.Delegates gave the CAHA executive authority to prepare a brief to the International Ice Hockey Federation asking that the 1967 world hockey championships be held in Canada.Potter said the CAHA wouldbid for the games at a meetingin Finland next year providingthat the “A” and “B” sectionsof the tourney were split up andplayed in different countries He expected this w-ould be done but otherwise he said the CAHA shouldn't take the financial risk of having the weak sisters of international hockey play here.‘‘They wouldn’t draw flies,” slid Potter.Other centennial projects planned are a national minor hockey tournament and possibly a national ice stadium.NHL askedSecretary - Manager Gordon Juckes said such an arena which would include an ice surface comparable to those overseas now was in the talking stage in Ottawa.The CAHA also approved a recommendation that its branches govern the tournaments featuring boys below 10 years of ageDelegates said the branches now were being criticized for not being involved in them.Putting the branches in charge would enable the CAHA to wipe out such abuses as forcing young boys to travel long distances and to play too many games in a short period, delegates said.Delegates also picked out sites for their annual meetingsfor the next three vears.
