Allen MakesMost Of His Playing TimeBy VICTOR COTA Register Sports WriterANAHEIM - Given a chance, California Surf forward Craig Allen can work wonders.A victim of the NASL rule which demands that at least three Americans be on the field at all times, the Channel Islands native has seen limited action this season, most of it coming off the bench.Though a handicap, that hasn't stopped the 20-year-old's ability to score goals and he proved it Wednesday night as he came off the bench to tally the Surfs lone goal in a 1-0 overtime victory over the Houston Hurricane at Anaheim Stadium.His heroics, however limited, were witnessed by the smallest crowd to watch a Surf match at the Big A, 3,621.Allen was inserted into the lineup with less than 10 minutes to play. The purpose was simple: to try and spring the elusive forward loose and hope for some kind of score.It took a special effort for Allen to score, as he waited in front of the goal for a play to materialize. Once it did, he didn’t think twice to score.Allen scored on a rebound at 2:59 into the first ?wminute overtime period, taking a ball which bounced off the crossbar and scoring easily.Laurie Abrahams, who came within inches of scoring several times dliring the match, took a cross in the penalty box from Paul Cahill and headed the ball off the crossbar.The rebound apparently took the Hurricane defenders off their rhythm and Allen squeaked in to score unmarked.Allen also came off the bench and scored against Edmonton and Washington. He has now scored three goals.The goal was about the only exciting moment in the match, which saw Surf midfielder Wolfgang Suhnholz go down with an ankle injury in the first half. Suhnholz was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange. X-rays were negative.We didn’t play well in the first half, Surf coach Peter Wall said. “We played quite well in the second half.“It was a win of character rather than of good play.Showing the most character was Allen, whom Wall called the Surfs “super sub.(Ragltkir Photo By AL GAMBOA)Surfs Midfielder Manny Neves Controls The BallAllen had more a reason to show off since his father was in attendance, visiting from the Channel Islands.Of the 35 shots that were taken by both teams, few were threatening. Steve Moyers, the man who replaced Allen in the starting lineup earlier in the year, twice broke away, only to have Hurricane goalkeeper Paul Hammond take the ball away from him.Abrahams came close three times, but each was inches from either the bar or one of the posts. Ail five of his shots were rejected.Houston's Eduardo Marasco provided a scare in the second half when he broke loose on the wing, but his shot hit the side netting.The match started to get out of hand, as the Surf was called for 20 fouls and the Hurricane for 12.The Surf remains in first place in the American West with a 5-6 record and 48 points. California will travel to second place San Diego on Saturday.
