Gavitt t pick team tonightLEXINGTON, Ky. (UPI) -The 48 Olympic basketball hopefuls tonight have one last chance to impress the selection committee during a tripleheader in Memorial Coliseum at the University of Kentucky. The committee will meet after the competition and chose a 12-man team, which will be announced 9.30 a.m. EDT Friday. The team will compete this summer in the Gold Medal games in five NBA cities and a sixth game against the 1976 Olympic team. The grueling practice sessions the players have been involved in since Monday ended Wednesday morning. That night’s practice consisted of full court scrimages, the first time the players had been involved in games ofregulation length.“A lot of it is exhaustion. Along with the physical abuse you take, it’s pretty much what I expected it to be — hard, blood and guts,” said Indiana guardIsiah Thomas.U.S. Olympic coach Dave Gavitt said all eyes are on the same action as the players get on the mam court, and the pressure builds.“In the workouts this week, we’ve needed to find people with a high degree of energy and intensity,” he said. “The trials are designed to be very demanding, physically and mentally. The players have responded well to the situations we’re trying to present. The players have responded wellto each other.”
