THE COURIER-EXPRESS, DuBois, Pa.—Serving Clearfield, Jefferson and Elk County Area- Monday, May 22, 1978 ,m-miivby Butbv Myen C-E Sports WriterCLARION—Records went by the wayside like falling rain Saturday as the District IX Track and Field Cham pionships in Class AAA and AA in both boys and girls competition was held at Clarion State College.DuBois Area did not fare well in team scoring but came up with great individual performances from their Super Sophs. Blaine Michael and Amy Kline.Michael was a triple winner, taking the two hurdle races and the triple jump, and just missed pulling out the 440 relay with a strong anchor leg that gotthe DuBois Area Beavers a second place.Amy Kline ran to a record breaking :15.6 time in the 110 hurdles and finished 2nd in the 100 yard dash, ran the second leg on the 440 relay team that grabbed runnerup honors and was a close third in the 220 dash.Of the Beavers 80 points in the team scoring which gave them third place. Amy Kline accounted for 32 of the 43.BrookvilleThe Brookville boys best showing was a second in the long jump by Tim Zim merman, a third by Jeff Ent in the mile run and some fourths by Keith Lash. Dsve Maxwell the two-mile and 400 relay teams.The Raider girls' team was third in team scoring behind Elk County Christian and Kane with 54 points.Maxine Birch, Cindy Dush and the mile relay team, all qualified for states with second place showings in their events.Lori Lauffer had two thirds in the triple jump and 440 dash and the Brookville girls 440 and 2-mile relay teams also csme home third. DuBois AreaMark Andrekovich won the high jump in a special ‘jump-off to give the Beavers 10 team points. Mark won with a leap of 5-9.Jim Toombs was second to Michael in the 330 hurdles and was second man on the 440 realy team.Andy Hitchings took a third in the long jump and led off for the runnerup 440 relayers.Junior Mark Davidson is the other 440 relay member that will be going on to states.Besides Amy Kline's school and District IX record for the hurdles, the DuBois Ares girls set school marks in the 440 and mile relays.Kline. Sue Petrucci, AnnetteDeLarme and Shelly Grinnen teamed up in the 440 and Kathy Casey. Jtne Licatovich, Glenda Bortz and Grace Wray ran the mile relay.District IX recordsGeorge O'Malley of Port Allegheny threw the discus and shot to record lengths to pace the boys records breakers.Kurt Lehnortt of Clarion had a javelin throw of 220-4 for a new mark.The Double A boys of Elk County ran to a new mark in the mile relay and Frank German of Punxsy was the lone AAA boy to set a record with his mile timing.The Triple A gab settled for Kline's 110 hurdles run, a mile run by Susie Maruca and a triple jump setting.The Class AA girls really stole the show Saturday. The put 11 new records on the District IX books and three girls were double mark setters.Patti Szczotka of Elk Co. was the fastest in the 110 and 220 dashes. Carmen Parker of Coudersport outlasted the 880 and milers and Jayne Beatty of Moniteau had the longest distances in the shot and discus.The 110 hurdles, 440 dash, javelin throw and high and triple jump records fell too.Under ideal weatherconditions the new emphasis on girls sports reaped a big dividend. Nick Faldo of England shot 67 and was second at 275.JAMESBURG, N.J. -Nancy Lopez parred the first hole of a sudden death playoff to defeat JoAnne Carner and win a $100,-000 women's golf tour event.Lopez shot a final round 1-under par 70 for a three-round total of 210, to tie Carner, who entered the round with a 3-stroke lead after a course record 66 in the second round. Carner shot a final round 2-over-par73.TOKYO — Masashi Ozaki came from 1 shot off the pace with a 3-under-par 69 to win a $110,000 international golf tournament by 5 strokes.Ozaki finished the 72-hole event with 13-under-par 275.Josaku Shimada, Isao Aoki and Fujio Kobayashi tied for second place at 8-under-par 280.Chucks boys’ team was too much for the other five ClassAAA teams.Coach Jack La Marca's gang piled up an incredible 273 V* points While the runnerup school, St. Marys had 84. DuBois Area's fourth place in the last event, the mile relay, gave them third as they were tied with the Dutch of SM prior to that event.Bradford was fourth, Brookville fifth and Clearfield rounded out the field.It was a real battle for the team title in Class AAA Girls with Clearfield winning onthe strength of Patti Duckett's first place in the high jump in the next to last event and Bradford being shutout in the same contest.St. Marys nipped Punxsy for third and DuBois Area,missing the strong field work by Paula Phillips came infifth.Linda Hoover won the javelin for DuBois Area but Paula's absence in that and the shot, discus and triple jump hurt.ClaM AAClarion came on strong in the field events to beat back the challenge of Elk CountyChristian coached by former Beaver John Cherry.Clarion had just over 136 points to ECC’s 101. Kane was third with only 51 and Redbank Valley had an even 50.The Elk County Christian girls pulled 87 points to send Kane with 67 to second spot in the team race. The record breaking runs by PattiSzczotka of ECC had alot todo with the victory.The two top placers in each event won the right to ad vance to states at Ship- *’ pensburg State College next.
