Smart move by CAHACHARLOTTETOWN(CP) — Taking its cue from Russia, the Canadian Amateur Fiockey Association appointed Dr. Cecil (1. Eaves of Calgary Monday as development co-ordinator.Dr. Eaves, 38, a teacher at University of Windsor, Ont., was a consultant during the 1972-73 season for Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League.Dr. Eaves said “we want to find what parts are necessary to make a complete hockey player and also what ingredients are needed to produce a successful team.He said his duties will involve co-ordinating efforts of all technical directors in the various branches across Canada.“I recently returned from Moscow,” Dr. Eaves said, “and after observing their system, found what we saw was no different from the programs we are planning.”However, he added, their physical culture institutes trained 238,000 coaches to work with different sports. Seven of the 23 institutes specialize in hockey.“They create test tube hockey players from the age of four,” he said.Earlier, Joe Kryczka of Calgary, outgoingpresident, bitterly attacked the World Hockey Association, the International Ice Hockey F'ederation and Hockey Canada.“I am distressed and upset that a person purporting to be the head of a professional hockey group (Cary Davidson) would report that the WHA terminated negotiations with the CAHA because its dollar figures were too high.“We have encountered many difficulties in attempting to negotiate withthe WHA. We hadpreliminary meetings with their officials two months ago and a further session during the Memorial Cup playoffs in Montreal.“I can’t understand what Davidson was talking about when he reported that our dollar figures were too high — when in fact the figures discussed were brought in by members of the WHA committee.“We will have to standup and be counted and prove to the WHA or anyone else who cares to listen that we are the governing body of hockey in this country.“The WHA apparently now is content to sit aside and steal our players and . . is attempting to drive a wedge between our branches,” he said.Kryczka was referring to rumors circulating Sunday that the WHA has offered the Western Canada Hockey League $70,000 a team for development purposes to acquire a pipeline to graduating age-groupplayers.Ilt;ryczka told the delegates to “discount reports” that the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association is spearheading the move to break ranks with the CAHA.Kryczka said that during meetings in Romania, the CAHA delegates were “treated with contempt, insulted and humiliated” by IIHF President J. F. (Bunny) Ahearne and “we should have a long memory on that score.”
