(Photo by Hoffman)Pirates Lose Twice To BravesPITTSBURGH (UPI) - For thefourth time in his two seasons in the majors Jose DeLeon took a nohitter into at least the seventh inning before failing to finish it. And by the afternoon’s end, the exploits of the Pittsburgh pitcher were of little consequence to the Pirates as the Braves posted a 5-1 victory.When DeLeon’s concentration wavered in the eighth, Manager Chuck Tanner replaced him with loser Kent Tekulve, 1-4.I think if I had been able to pitch more I could have gotten it,” DeLeon said. I still felt strong in the sixth and seventh, but in the eighth I had nothing. I was kind of shaking and my heart was pumping hard.The Pirates took a 10 lead off of Braves’ pitcher Len Barker in the sixth on Dale Berra’s solo homer, the first homer Barker surrendered in his last 60 innings.Alex Trevino broke up DeLeon's no-hit bid in the eighth with a soft liner to center. Tekulve came on and gave up Rafael Ramirez’s RBI groundout to tie it.“When he gave up the hit in the eighth, he seemed to lose his con centration,” Atlanta's Bob Horner said. “But for the first seven inn ings he pitched better than anyone I’ve seen in the last four or five years.”Bob Watson’s two-run double highlighted a four-run ninth for Atlanta. Horner led off with a double and pinch runner Albert Halltook third on Chris Chambliss* infield out. Dale Murphy was intentionally walked, putting runners on first and third.Glenn Hubbard hit a chopper to short and Hall beat the throw home. Trevino then forced Hubbard at second, sending Murphy to third. Watson, a pinch hitter, greeted reliever Rod Scurry with a two-run double to make it 4-1 and Ramirez singled in the last run of the inning.SaturdayPITTSBURGH (UPI) - ClaudellWashington had three hits and scored two runs and Rick Mahler recorded his first victory in more than a year, giving the Atlanta Braves a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in game called in the seventh inning by rain.Washington, the fifth-leading hitter in the league with a .333 average entering the game, keyed both of Atlanta’s two run outbursts; he had a leadoff single in the first, stole his 10th base of the season and moved to third on catcher Tony Pena’s throwing error amd scored on Hall’s triple. The Phillies also scored in the third when Giant third baseman Joel Youngblood missed a throw from the outfield, allowing Joe Lefebvre to score from second.Cardinals 3, Reds 2 At St. Louis, Darrell Porter hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Cardinals, who have won six of their last seven. Porter, playing for the first time since suffering a chip fracture on his right thumb May 8, homered off loser Tom Hume, 2-4.Dodgers 3, Expos 2 At Los Angeles, rookie Franklin Stubbs drilled a two-run homer with two out in the seventh to power the Dodgers.Mets 4, Padres 2 At San Diego, Tony Gwynn dropped Jesse Orosco’s fly to deep center for a three base error and set the stage for the Mets to score twice in the 10th. The 1600 meter relay team lost at the wire and Paula Connor was second in both hurdle races for Brookville’s best finishes in the girls’ meet.Good Day For RaidersMark Kessler did come back to win the 200 meter dash and the Brookville boys’ 1600 meter relay team ran away from the opposition to win that event and go on to States this weekend.Coach Dan Murdock’s tracksters placed in 10 of the 18 events and was third in the scoring with 55 points behind champion Kane’s 99 and Cameron County’s 64.“I’m happy with what we accomplished,” said the Raiders’ boys coach, “but, the biggest disap pointment of the day was Kessler being scratched from the 100 meter dash.” TheBlue Raider 1600 meter relay team got off to a good start as Kevin Harriger circled the 400 meter track first for a slight lead and Doug Roseman, Dave Burdge and Kessler added to the margin to cruise home in first place a good six seconds in front of runnerup Cameron County.Dave Burdge took a second in the 300 meter hurdles and fourth in the 110 high hurdles; Kevin Har riger was fourth in the 400 dash and fifth in the 800 meter run; Den-nis London was third for Biookville in the long jump; Don Gill took fourth in the triple jump; and Don Gill and Steve McAninch combined with Kessler and Burdge for a sixth in the 400 meter relay while Harriger, Kurt Grotten thaler, Rob Stormer and Doug Roseman got the Blue Raiders a third in the 3200 meter relay.Davis Sets RecordsPatti Davis of Clarion-Limestone was named the Class AA top per former for setting records in the shot put and discus and coming in second in the javelin. Davis is the returning state champion in the javelin and discus. The Lady Lions of C-L won the team trophy in edging out Elk County Christian and Karns City.Lady Raider coach Jim Fron tino’s girls took a third in the 400 meter relay, a fourth in the 400 meter dash by Lisa Johnson and a sixth in the 100 meter dash by Laura Willis.Brookville NipsBig RunBIG RUN The Brookville Grays made their debut in the Federation Baseball League a winning one by nipping the Big Run Brewers 3-2 yesterday afternoon in the only league game played due to the weather.Brad Myers went the distance to pick up the win and smacked a first inning home run with Scott Keth aboard to help his own cause. D. McKinney hit another homer for Brookville in the top of the second off starting and losing pitcher Steve Bowser.Big Run got a run back in their first on a double by George Baka and Richie Hurd’s sacrifice fly. The Brewers staged a rally in the sixth as Myers issued two walks and Tim Lowmaster scored on a single by Tim Schuckers.Brad Myers surrendered four hits, gave up six walks and fannedH»tn batters.
