Over Lightly...withWoodyWOODY WILSONDaily Herald Sports EditorNo individual or team wins without being in condition. At Baker, a fitness program was instituted last year and isstarting to pick up this year. The program, directed mainly by wrestling coach Larry Blackstone and football headsmen Jim Stanley but used by mentor’s players of all sports, is helping the individual strengthen specific areas which are lacking and make them function to their fullest.Research, say the coaches, indicates that the greatest strength increases result from weight lifting programs that require the completion of from six to eight repetitions of a particularmovement. Once this goal is achieved, the overload is adjusted byincreasing the weight.Research has found that, after the first work-out, an individual will have an increase in strength of five percent. After the 'econd between two and four percent and after every work-out om then on an increase of between five and eight percent instrength. The coaches at Baker have two clubs, the 1,500 and the 1.000, that individuals are striving to reach. To make the 1,000 pound club you must: Squats, five repetitions for 300 pounds; billy cannon, 50 for 175 pounds; standing press, five for 150 pounds; bench, two repetitions for 200 pounds, and powercleans, five for 175 pounds.Since the program’s institution last year, no individual has made the 1,500 pound club but 11 have cracked the lesser one.The 11 individuals making the 1,000 pound club are Barry Hall, Jack Mattachione, Richard Butts, Mike Allen, Lou Geiger, Glen Whited. Doug Jones. Tom Plappert, Gene Thomas and RickConrad.Several of these are nearing the 1,500 club, says Blackstone. Despite the Flyers having losing seasons in football and track this school year, Blackstone and Stanley feel the program will start benefiting this year.
