OLYMPIC RULES MAY FORCECANADA TO QUIT HOCKEY19E narwa:• ••« • •••••OLYMPIC RULES . ..By STUART LAKE OTTAWA (CP) — A newmethod of selecting Canada's hockey team for the 1964 Olym-pics-if Canada decides to enter a team could result from the five-day annual meeting of the Canadian Amateur Hockey As-socation.About 100 delegates will consider two alternatives to the present practice of picking a strong senior club and stocking it with some replacements, when the sessions start here Sunday.Canada was runner-up to Russia in 1956 and to the United States in 1960. Concern over1960 proved to be the big year for Moore as he wound up the season as Miami's leading ground gainer. He carried 94 times for 616 yards and a 6.5 average. He caught seven passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns and returned 12 kickoffs for 318 yards. John was also the leading scorer with eight touchdowns for 48 points.. At the conclusion of the season he was named Miami’s most Valuable Player and was selected on the All Mid American Conference first team, lie wasnamed to the All Ohio second•team and was an Honorable Mention Choice on the Associated Press All American. Cincinnati and Toledo named Moore to their all-opponent teams.Moore had a brief try out with the Buffalo Bills but gave it up and returned to get his degree this coming June.• Tit |v* •# . » t • i !• t t Wv.'.v.v.vw.vv yv.v • * • • •••• ' *'• • • «• • • •• • ••• II ‘If «lf !• »»• 0 g«•*. - • | • • • •iL • • •• •• ••• • • • •• •• k* i • •• •^1 in .1 .1 •• •! ••• •IMl»».| *■ •»!•. t Mfll •«!•• H I • f • ■ .......■ il Ifl I I • « • | . « « • «|M til »• t * M • I I I • • nr-t ••.$ »t • .«•••«A. BUT THEthis showing - in contrast to Canada’s almost complete domination of Olympic hockey in previous years-is reflected in two resolutions. The first, submitted by the Alberta association, wants thearmy to train and control the team. Promising juvenile and junior players would be enlisted in 1963 to blend with veterans already in the service and a full playing schedule would be run off before the team leaves for Austria.Players could be discharged after the game if they wished.A second suggestion, submitted by Thunder Bay, calls for each branch to enter all-star teams in a round-robin tourney, the winner to represent Canada in the Olympics. Games would be played in Winnipeg, Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon and the Lakehend.Meanwhile there remains some doubt that Canada will have an Olympic team.CAHA president Jack Roxburgh told a meeting of the international ice federation in March that the CAHA objects of taking part in the games because of the differences in interpretation of amateurism by the International Olympic Committee and the CAHA code.“Under the present Olympic oath, the CAHA feels it won’t be able to enter a team,” he added. Some controversy is expected over a request by CAHA officers for $30,000 to establish a national magazine devoted to amateur hockey. The officers apparently feel that present magazines and papers in this field are too concerned with professional hockey.Several eastern Canada branches feel the magazine is not needed. Some associations back the venture but object to the suggestion that all players be required to subscribe $1 for the magazine when they take out playing cards.Alberta, noting that the CA HA celebrates its golden anniversary in 1964, wants a special tournament organized and teams brought to Canada from Russia, Japan, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and other countries.Among suggested rule changes is one governing the penalty shot. The Saskatchewan association wants a red line 12 inches in width and 10 feet long to be placed 30 feet in front of each goal line and parallel with it.Only the fouled player would be eligible to take the shot and Only the fouled player would be eligible to take the shot and fore shooting, the play would be wiped out. Play would continue if he failed to score.Under the present rule, any player designated by the coach can take the penalty shot and he can take his shot from any spot he chooses. Play stops if the shot is not successful.
