(Photo by Hoffman)District IX AA MeetKANE - The Brookville Blue Raider track and field teams made a great showing in the annual District IX Class AA meet Saturday despite less than ideal weather conditions.Coach Dan Murdock’s Brookville boys’ team finished second to the Karns City Gremlins as Raider Doug Roseman won the 800 meter run and the Blue Raider 3200meter relay team finished ahead of the pack.The Lady Raiders took the sixth spot in the 18-team field as Paula Connor of Brookville set a newDistrict record in the 300 meter low hurdles. Paula’s time of 45.6 seconds in the race broke the mark set by Battista of Kane in 1984 by almost a full second. Connor’s time in the event is also better than theAAA mark of 47.2 set by Jacque Fox of DuBois Area High in 1984.Connor was second in the 100 meter intermediate hurdles and helped the Brookville Lady Raiders’ 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams to place.Rain, hail and chilly breezes were the order of the day in contrast to the almost perfect weather Thursday for the Class AAA meet.But where there was only one mark set in the AAAs, three girls broke District records Saturday. In addition to Connor’s record-setting show in the 300 hurdles, Patti Kinch of North Clarion ran a 5:16.97 in the 1600 meters and defending state champion Connie Hall of Coudersport broke the record of 2:20.9 in the 800 meter run she set last year with a time of2:19.72 this time.GIRLS RESULTSThe race for the team title was a close one with Elk County Christian (62) edging Kane by seven points with Port Allegany right behind with 55 and North Clarion in at 53, A C Valley 52 and Brookville 50.Grace Moran of Port Allegany won the three dash races and placed second in the Long Jump to give her team 38 of its 55 points. Eleven schools took home a first place trophy in at least one event.The Lady Raiders of coach Jim Frontino placed Shawna Best second in the 3200 meter run and sister Michelle was sixth in the race. The 3200 meter relay team ofLisa Stormer, Kim Davis, Pam.Diilman and Shawna best was run-nerup; the 400 and 1600 meter relay teams were third; Janet Watt placed fifth in the Javelin and Lisa Stormer was sixth in the 800 meter run.BOYS RESULTSDoug Roseman led the Blue Raiders with a victory in the 800 meter run and Doug joined Pat Smith, Rob Stormer and Kevin Harriger in the 3200 meter relay and the Brookville quartet broke the tape first in that race, too.Earning team points for Brookville to put them in second place behind Karns City were Stormer in the 800, and, the 1600 meter relay team each taking seconds; Brent Shepard a 4th in the 3200 meter run along with a 4th for Harriger in the 400 dash; and Greg Ross who placed third in the shot, fourth in the javelin and fifth in the discus.Karns City, led by sprinter Steve Hovis, who was the only performer on the day to be a 4-time winner, romped to the team title with 117 points to runnerup Brookville’s 52 while back in third place tied with 44 points were Coudersport, Elk County and Moniteau.The 400 meter relay race was run twice in a real rarity for a District meet. Starter and meet official Gene Rutkowski explained why he decided to re-run the fast heat of the 400.“A-C Valley in lane 4 was disqualified for interfering with Karns City in lane 3 which in turn hindered Cameron County and Kane in lanes 2 and 1. In a District race like this which means the winner qualifies for States, I felt it was only right to re-run the racewithout A-C Valley.”Cameron County, which nipped Kane at the wire despite a desperate lunge by the Kane anchorman the first time around, won easily the second time as CC anchorman Tony Onorato had thead when he accepted the baton instead of having to make up a few yards in his sprint to the tape as he did in the first race. Cameron County just missed the District record of 44.9 with perfect han-doffs the second time.Steve Hovis didn’t set any records but must missed a new District mark by .19 of a second in the 400 meter dash. Hovis had a slight edge on Brookville’s Doug Roseman in the last leg of the 1600 meter relay but once the Gremlin got in gear Roseman couldn’t catch him. Coach Murdock told me to try and push him. Hovis gets off to a slow start but I knew I wasn’t going to get any closer,” Roseman said later when asked if he thought he could catch the Gremlin star and pull off a Raider win in the day’s final event. “If I had to run against him all the time, I think I’d find something else to do,” Roseman said in admiration of KC’s super track man who drew raves all day from opposing coaches, runners and fans.DISTRICT MVPNo, Steve Hovis of Karns City did not win the James M. Manners award for the OUTSTANDING performer of the day. Neither did Jim Fair of Karns City who won both Hurdles races, or the Tonkin brothers, Dave and Mike, of Cameron County who were far and above the best distance runners on the cold and wet day.The TRACK MVP was Grace Moran of Port Allegany.Track NotesConnie Hall of Coudersport and Mike Tonkin of Cameron County will be returning to Shippensburg University Friday and Saturday for the PIAA competition where they won state championships in1984. Hall is the defending 800 meter girls’ champ and Mike Tonkin took the 3200 meter event in Class AA a year ago.Coach Jim Frontino of the Lady Raiders of Brookville says Paula Connor has a good chance to place again at states after running the 300 meter hurdles in an even 46 seconds good for 6th last year. Paula’s new District time of 45.2shows her improvment... Coach Frontino had nothing but praise for the Lady Raiders. “I was pleased with the effort of our 3200 meter relay team as they did better at Districts than I thought they would. I thought the teams and individuals would place about where they did but the weather definitely hurt the times in the District meet Saturday.”Brookville boys’ coach Dan Murdock will be taking Ray Doolittle and Brent Shepard along as alternates for the 3200 meter relay team with regulars Roseman, Stormer, Smith and Harriger. “I was real tickled with our District second place showing,” remarked Coach Murdock. “We didn’t do well in the dual meets but after we placed third in the A-C Valley Invitational I knew we could do well in this type of competition. The results show the dedication of our senior kids and Doug Roseman especially who skipped the Senior Class trip to work on his conditioning. Greg Ross had a great season in the field events and was the leading point maker for the team this year.”Others expected to do well at states according to the Blue Raider coaches are Patti Kinch of North Clarion in the 1600 meter run, Hovis in the sprints and maybe some of the field people.One big disappointment Saturday was the absence of John Dubots of Coudersport who suffered a leg injury and couldn’t compete. Dubots against Hovis in the sprints would have been worth the price of admission as the Coudy runner had some fast times in the 100 and 200s this season.Federation BaseballBrookville —Falls CreekFALLS CREEK- A combination of Mike Turner’s arm and Jim McKee’s bat led the Falls Creek Eagles to a 3-0 victory over the Brookville Grays Sunday in a Federation Baseball Leaguecontest.The loss was the first for the Grays (3-1) while the Eagles are now 4-1.Mike Turner and losing pitcher Brad Myers were locked up in a pitching duel until the bottom of the fourth inning when Ray Hand drew a base on balls, Larry Smileyumuweu with a single, and JimMcKee drove in all the runs FallsCreek would need with a three-run home run.Mike Turner limited the Brookville squad to four hits while fanning 11 in a strong pitching performance. (UPI) - All it took for Bill Elliott to win the Dover 500 by a one-lap margin and earn his fifth straight victory on the NASCAR Grand National circuit was 30 laps of pain.“Really, the only problem we had was that our power steering went out with about 30 laps to go, but I figured I could make it that far without it,” said Elliott.“My shoulders are really paying for it now, and I’m sure they’ll be sore for a few days.The Dawsonville, Ga., driver pushed his Ford Thunderbird to an average speed of 123.094 miles per hour to collect the $44,500 winner’scheck.Harry Gant finished second a lapbehind Elliott, and Kyle Petty finished third, in the same lap as Gant.
