The “Warriors beat Frankfurt, 1*0, in overtime to win the Bhie Division title. —SS, BorgussTwoBy BEN ABRAMS Staff WriterWIESBADEN (SS) — The Wiesbaden Warriors defeated the Frankfurt Eagles, 1-0, in overtime, in a Blue Division soccer game here Friday to cap one of the finest spring sportscampaigns in USDESEA history. ......The victory, accomplished on Harold Braun’s header off a kick by Ferro Fisch with 1:53 gone in the second five-minute overtime period, gave coach Blan Palmer’s kickers the Blue Division championship and secured for the school at least , a share of every spring sports crown.The Warriors won the USDESEA Class A track and fieldchampionships last week at Nuernberg and the Warrior net-ters tied for the over-all title with Munich last week at Gar-miseh.Braun played a sparkling field game for the Warriors and his goal atoned for a missed 11-meter penalty kick late in the first overtime period. He got to shoot the penalty kick when Frankfurt goalie Dan Rhodes, eager to get the ball and preserve his shutout, knocked Jack O’Connor down in the penalty area.Braun took the kick and his effort went wide to the left, leaving the inspired Frankfurt team, which went into the fray with a 2-3-1 record, jubilent, and Braun prone on the ground upset over the unusual miss.But Wiesbaden wouldn’t be denied. Twice the Warriors put Rhodes under extreme pressure9in the opening minute of play in the last overtime and twice he arose to the occasion. Once more the Warriors stormed the gate and this time Braun flipped his head backwards with perfect timing arid deflected Fisch’s kick past the outstretched Rhodes for the tally.Frankfurt attempted to pull Out a tie in the last mihute of play but Wiesbaden’s defense, led by Kevin Fossett, whose play was scintillating all day, and goalie Art Vasquez, foiled the bid.Vasquez came up with several fine stops during the early stages of the first half when Frankfurt staged its strongestoffensive showing. The Warriors came to life offensively after that Initial Eagle charge and Rhodes came through withseveral saves — including two spectacular ones right before intermission.The defensive battle continued until Braun finally cracked the ice with Fossett, Ray Maez, Jack Hostetter, Gary Gallegos and O’Connor pacing Wiesbaden and Roger Marino and George Tumas sparkling for Frankfurt.The victory gave the Warriors a 7-0-1 record and 15 points in Blue Division competition. Stuttgart, which battled Wiesbaden to a 0-0 standoff, also was undefeated but the Stallions could muster only 13 . points with its 5-0-3 log.The Wiesbaden JV downed their Frankfurt counterparts, 2-0, in a battle of unbeaten teams., • ♦ *Soccer Title Gives Wiesbaden
