The host Chucks saved their best effort for the last team outing of the campaign and scored a convincing victory over the Owls, winning 103te-65lA over the runner-up Owls,The long-awaited individual showdown came in the 3,200-meter run when the Chucks’ Mike Hampton and Clearfield’s Matt Vezza finally went head-to-head. Hampton used a late surge to defeat Vezza in a closely contested battle.Final team scores in the boys’ competition showed Punxs’y winning the title with Bradford second, DuBois third (5814), Clearfield fourth (41V^) and St. Marys fifth (15).Bradford had little competition in winning the girls’ crown. The Lady Owls had 107% points to easily down runner-up Clearfield (52%). The Lady Chucks placed third with 42 points followed by. DuBois at 35% and St. Marys with 21% points.Hampton was the winner in the tight 3,200~meter duel with Vezza with a winning time of 9:34.4. Vezza took second a 9:36.1. The two played a cat-and-mouse game through the several laps with the Chuck junior spending most of the race a few strides behind the Bison star. Hampton looked strong as he took the gun lap lead at the top of the back4% - ■ *stretch and then stretched his lead to five strides at the tape.Hampton also put on a good show in the 1,600 where he won in a time of 4:21,7 over the Bisons’ Dusty Cran-dell, who was in second place at 4:24.8,Other winners for the Chucks were Scott Young, who took the high jump in a district-record 6-7 and the 110-meter hurdles at 15.4; the 3,200-meter relay team, anchored by Hampton, with a winning time of 7:59.9; Joel Martin in the shot put (48-9); Dave LeCompte in the 800 meters with a district-record 1:56.6; and Kevin Simpson in the long jump (19-8).Craig Beam, coming off an ankie injury, took three seconds for the Chucks in the 100 meters, 400 and the 200.PAHS Coach Jack LaMarca called the win “a real team effort — almost everyone pitched in with some points/’Taking first-place medals for the Chuck girls team were Crystal Brown in the 100 meters at 13.3; Nini Santos in the triple jump with a distance of 32-3; and Erica Homan in the long jump at 15-3.DuBois’ Dave Moulthrop was presented the James Manners Award as the outstanding athlete as he took two firsts and ran in two winning relay events for the Beavers,The results with the winning Nmes or distances:SCO-merer hurdles — Wilson, DuBois, 40.0.
