IX, Class AA track▲i▲By BANTLEY MYERSKANE — Two new District IX, Class AA track records were set during the 1987 championships at Kane High School’s complex Saturday. Tracy Landraf of Karns City ran the 100-meter intermediate hurdles in a time of 16 seconds flat to knock 0.3 seconds off the old mark; and, the North Clarion girls 3200 meter relay team ran the race in 9:54.1 to better the old standard of 9:56.1“I’m happy with our kids and thought they performed well to day,” said Lady Raider coach Jim Frontino. Brookville was a bitThe Kane Wolves romped to the boys team title while the Clarion-Limestone girls claimed the AA title by only five points over Elk County Christian.Brookville had a pair of winners in the girls meets as Arlene Sain won both the shot put and discus and Phyllis Tonkin ran away with the 800 meter run. The Lady Raiders finished fifth in the team race with 43 points as they placed in five events. Paula Swineford finished second in the discus and Amy Henline was fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 100 dash.down this year in having few qualifiers for the District meet.The Brookville boys didn’t have the kind of day they hoped they would. Dave just had a bad day in los ing to Clarion’s fine sophomore Eric Laughlin of Clarion. CoachMurdock and even Tonkin’s father had a tough time figuring out what happened. “It’s just one of those things, said Murdock.Blue Raider Doug Lefevre placed second in the long jump and third in the 400 dash. Randy Palmer placed third in the 300 hurdles, and Rod Winters got a sixth in the shot put. The Brookvile 3200 meter relay team was third and the 1600 relayers sixth.Outstanding performerGrace Moran of Port Allegany was named the outstanding performer in the District AA meet as she won the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes in near record times. Moran did beat the PIAA qualifying times in all three races and should place at States. (Photo by Myers).up in rankings.Gayle Drake of Kane also qualified for the PIAA’s in the 100intermediate hurdles as she wassecond to record maker Landgraf; Cyndi Villella of Elk County qualified in the 200 dash and Mary Deegan of Smethport did the same in the 400 dispite placing second Saturday.Doubles winners for the girls in addition to Sain of Brookville were Landgraf of Karns City who also took the 300 hurdle race; Misty Slagle of Clarion-Limestone in jumping in front of the pack in the long and triple jumps; freshman Lynnette Duel of Northern Potter in the 1600 and 3200 runs and the North Clarion 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams.Eleven girls beat the PIAA qualifying times or distances in asharp upswing from last year’s district meet.Boys beat PIAA marksThe Class AA school boys tracksters did well in qualifying for States although they did not set any Disrict IX records under ideal weather conditions. Threejavelin throwers made States, four in the pole vault, two in the 300 IM hurdles and one each in the shot, 400 dash, 800 and 1600 runs and the discus. This year’s District IX meet was way above the times and distances of a year ago.Todd Weidow of Kane won theshot and discus, Rick Panzer of North Clarion was the dash champ in winning the 100 and 200’s, and Eric Laughlin of Clarion took the 1600 and 3200 runs for the day’s only boys’ double-winners.Closest to setting new District standards were John Reitz of Union in the 300 hurdles - he ran it in 40 seconds flat and the record is 39.67; and the Elk County Christian 1600 meter relay team ran the race in 3:29.2 to miss the mark of 3:28.78 set in 1978.Post meet notesNot to belabor the comparison of the AAA and AA schools in the District meets, but the AA’s with 21 schools, definitely run a much more competitive finals. And very few AAA performers would have won in the AA meet. Tonkin went on to win in a fine time of 2:26.1 which was better than the PIAA qualifying mark,AA’s (high jump, javelin and shot), but after that it was slim pickings for either the AAA girls or boys in comparing them to the AA’s.
