The Chuck girls were tied for first by the DuBois girls and the Beaver boys finished second to the Chucks.Thirteen of the DuBois performers will be headed for the state meet next week at Shippensburg. It was a big day for DuBois track. Blaine Michael was awarded the first James L. Manners Award as outstanding athlete in the meet. Michael finished first four times to earn the honor.The locals also set three District IX meet records. Combined. 8 records fell in the meet.Michael with his four firsts in both hurdles and the long and tnple jumps set a new standard in the low hurdles with a clocking of :39.1. Mike Watson’s 6’ 4” high jump put him in the record books.In the girls portion of the meet. Sheila Wray set a new 800 meter record with a time of 2:26.5. Amy Kline posted a new mark of :15.4 in a trial of the 110 hurdles and that will stand as a District record.The final scores for the boys showed Punxsy on top with 103 followed by DuBois 81 */*; Bradford 46; Clearfield 40; and St. Marys 32. The Beaver ladies and Chuck girls tied with 68 Vt apiece followed by St. Marys with 62. Bradford 34 and Clearfield 21.The girls meet was in dispute. The first announcement was that the two teams had tied for the title. Then after a recount it was given to DuBois outright. But, there had been a problem in the 1600 meter where two girls were turned around at the finish, Gretchen Gordon of Bradford and Alicia Curtis of Punxsy were given fourth and fifth respectively. The problem was not recognized immediately and was changed after the meet was over. Gordon, in a finedisplay of sportsmanship, after discovering that there was a dispute in her event went to the scorers to tell them that Curtis had passed her at the finish.“If it had to be a tie, I’m glad it turned out that way, said girls head coach Sam Richards, “I wouldn’t have liked to win on a technicality.Besides Michaels’ four firsts and Watson’s, the Beavers took two more. Andy Hitchings won the 400 meter in a time of :52.3 and Brian Licatovich and Randy Watson tied for first in the pole vault at 12’ 6”.Licatovich and Watson were unable to break the tie after several attempts at a greater height and then lower heights, where each managed to clear the bar. Finally a coin flip left Licatovich first and Watson second.■littleleagueDuBois Little LeagueSeniorShop Save scored 10 runs in the second inning but then had to add 3 more in the fifth and 5 more in the sixth to wind up with a 23-14 win over Good Realty. Good had gotten as close as 15-14.Tom Palumnbo was the winning hurler and had a double and single in his own cause. For Good, Orsich, Scull, losing pitcher Dan Read, Weichman, Bailey, Werner, Benton and Ross all had hits.MajorA big 8 run fourth helpedcarry Service Club to an 11-2 victory over Triangle. He added seconds in both hurdles and the long jump, each time behind teammate Michael. Mike Watson also qualified for another event with second in the triple jump. Ron Bojalad was second in the shot and Ray Sekula second in the javelin to earn state trips.Frank German and Mark Forrest were the triple winners for the Chucks. German won the 1600. 3200 and 3200 relay while Forrest won the 100, 200 and 400 relay. Doug Shaffer was in the 1600 and 3200 relays.In addition to Sheila Wray, the girls also had three other first place winners. Amy Kline won the hurdles in : 15.6 after her record time of the morning trials. Grace W’ray took the high jump with a leap of 4’ 10. Linda Hoover took first in the javelin with a heave of 115' 10.Sheila and Grace Wray will be in three events at states. They are both part of the 3200 and 1600 relays as was Sue McCully. Jane Licatovich completed the 3200 relay team and Amy Kline the 1600 relay squad.The other new records went to the Bradford 3200 relay team of Tammy Songer, Renee Fotch, Kris Kaver and Mary J. Kline; the St. Marys 1600 relay team of Ann Copella, Mary Schreiber, Carolyn Quinn and Jean Daghir; Daghir again in the triple jump and Elaine Uberti of St. Marys in the long jump.Double winners in the meet included. Copella in the 1600 and 400 relays; Patti Strong of Punxsy in the 400 and 200; Susie Maruca of Punxsy in the 1600 and 3200; and Carolyn Quinn of St. Marys in the 1600 and 400 relays.District Notes The DuBois girls finished last at the District meet a year ago but put on a strong show this time around. The finish of the javelin where Hoover won and Kim Christian finished third helped guarantee the tie.Amy Kline’s finishing kick insured the girls 1600 meter relay team of going to states.All of the old records were converted to meters so they would be consistent with the new running style.Michael’s main competition for the first James L. Manners Award were German and Forrest of Punxsy.The meet went quite smoothly in the track events.Thev finished almost an hour¥ahead of time.
