Mon May 1R. 195918Inter-High Track Meet Tuesday and WednesdayBy RON MEYERSHigh school track and field coaching, once merely a job of recruiting entrants tor inter-room and the subsequent inter-high meets, hns developed into a battle ot stratagems.Tuesday, months ot hard work, intricate training programs and secret manoeuvres, will fuse at Sargent Park, with the start of the two-day annual inter-high field day. The final explosion comes Wednesday at the Stadium on a break trom the weatherman.With a raft of eager coaches moving into the track picture, veteran mentor Russ Pa stuck of St. John's has been forced to devote more time towards building awinner. He has been at the top or very close over the years, but the time was never more ripe for a win.Last fall, Pastuck abandonedfootball coaching. Many believed his move was prompted by his devotion to track. Over the winter months he worked hard withsprinters Bob Fisher-Smith, Eugene Senicki and Dennis Leibl. Techhad always been strong in the field and relay events and power in the 100 yards and 220 yards could prove the key to victory.Another reason why Tech Is spending more time on its track program is size. Once one of the larger high schools, it's now far behind Kelvin, Daniel McIntyre and Tec-Voc in enrollment, making it that much tougher to find good talent.If Pastuck thinks he's got problems, then legitimate worries also belong to Sisler's Pete Connellanand Vic Young of Elmwood, both novices in high school track coaching.At Sisler, where track takes a back seat to football and basketball, Connellan has to pick and choose horn among a handful of athletes. His school hasn't reached the stage where competitors can concentrate on any one sport. As a result, this time around, the Spartans will have to count on footballers Jack Cameron and A1 Patterson lor their strength.Young has inherited a handful of possible point getters from Lionel Orlikow, who has moved over ta powerful Kelvin. As a former track star, Young is used to rocky starts.Although the per capita pointsystem will he Instituted once again to aid the small schools, Young and Connellan are up against it. They don t have enough talent to spread among the individual and relay events — both important keys to success in the interschool meet.Thom Murray is fighting an all-out battle to bring Daniel McIntyre a winner. Long a real threat for city honors, the Macmen are feeling the effect of dwindling interest in track in the west end of town. This forced Phijlips to intensify his already fantastic pace and the Riverview kids with Fred Keeley, Doug Paulus and Don Brewster as their mealtickets, could make things interesting.Churchill, like St. John's and Tec-Voc have good relay sides after a busy indoor season.Gordon Roll's hopes rest with sprinters Fetp Skinder and Dale Henwood and field whiz Dave Alsop.
