Page FourteenTHE COURIER-EXPRESS-Punxsutawney (AAA), Kane (44), Bradfordby JOHN KLKESCE Sports EditorCLARION—DuBois Areamw their win streak of four straight in the District 9 track and field championships end on Saturday when the Punxsutawney Chucks outscored the Beavers 97-78V* at the facility at Clarion State CollegeDespite a record tering performance bySmith in the 330termediate hurdles strong showing by Wanson, winning the 440 and triple jump, the Beavers were unable to crack the scoring in a couple events that led Punxsutawney to the victory.Smith ran a :39.5 in the 330 intermediates to break the old mark set by Greg Wolf.shat-TominandTomDuBois, :40.5 back in 1974. Smith also holds the school record.Wanson went 43-4V* in the triple jump and in the 440 led two other teammates to 11 Vi points in the event. Wanson ran a :52.8 while Joda Brown finished in a tie for second and Paul Hoover placed fourth. The discus saw Ernie Ishman and Paul Heberling getting a first and second while Dave Kaufman took a third for DuBois.Another first and second for the Chucks came in the 100 where Jim Divelbliss and Kevin Raybuck were 12 and Rick Powers a third.The Chucks put it out of reach in the 220 when • Diveibliss beat out Rick Powers and then Rick Barilar and Raybuck were third and fourth for Punxsutawney.The Beavers were shutout in the two mile while the Chucks again got a 12 finish from Dan Mitchell and Steve McGee.Running on the winning mile relay team for the Beavers were Smith, Brown, Hoover and Randy Powers.Smith and Randy Powers joined Wanson as a double winner.Divelbliss picked up a triple, winning the 100, 200 and member of the 880 relay team.Besides the record bySmith in the 330 intermediates. the only other record in the AAA event came in the pole vault.Bradford s That Bridge went 13-4 to break the old mark of 13-3 set by Meckley of Kane back in 1960.Smith finished second in the 120 highs, leading until the final hurdle until Roy Gomes of Bradford took the lead and won the event. Both runners were timed in : 15.3.Trailing Punxsutawney and DuBois were Bradford with 50 points, Brookville 23, Clearfield 22V*, St. Marys 17 and DuBois Central Christian (one runner) failed to score.Picking up first places for Bradford were Greg Johnson in the shotput. Gomes in the high hurdles.Larry Semple gave Clearfield their only first, winning the mile in 4:36.2.Other winner for Punxsutawney—John Mc(’ullough in the javelin.Max Wonder ling gave Brookville a second in the mile, beating out Pat Holleran in the final few yards. Wonderling was timedin 4:39.5.The Raiders had a third and fourth in the high jump by Mike Willis and Boyd Kerr. Kerr finished third in the long jump. Scott Davis was third in the discus for the Raiders.KANE AA TITLEThe Kane Wolves, picked my many to win the AA title, came through with 52 */a points to beat out Clarion with 35 and one third. Other top AA team scores, Karns City 29 Vi. Elk County Christian 22 and Redbank Valley 21.Mark Kopnitsky, Redbank Valley, had another big day, setting a new record in the330 intermediate hurdles with a time of :39.9. He broke his own mark of :40.6 set lastyear.Kopnitsky then tied the 120 highs with a run of : 14.9 in the trials. He came back to win the event with a time of : 15.0. Johns, Keystone, holds the : 14.9 time set in 1975.Some of theformances were by Redbankthrow oftop perin the AA meet Randy Burford, Valley, with a 51-11V* in the shotput; Youngsville's Ron McNitt a 4:27.3 in the mile; Greg Wolf. Kane. :50.9 in the 340 and Barry Slike, Clarion, 2:00.7 in the 880.The AA schools had better times or distances in 14 of the 18 events in comparing the A A with A AS schools.-O-GIRLS RECORD DAYThe girls have been in track and field for three years and Saturday at Clarion state they broke 13 of the 14 records set the past two years.Bradford won the team title, outscoring Kane and Ridgway 52 to 23. Elk County Christian and Union both scored 20Vi points, Brookville, Clearfield and Johnsonburg 14 each. Youngsville scored 13.Kane's Brenca Shrubb picked up a pair of individual wins, the 100 in : 11.8 and the 220 in :26.7.Bradford won two of the relays, the 880 relay in 1:52.1 and the 880 medley in 1:56.8. Union won the 440 relay inCindy Swigart placedsecond in the 100 and third in the 80 yard hurdles to lead the Brookville team.Other finishers for the Raiderettes. Kim Lucas a fifth in the discus. Wertz felt that Punxsutawney needed a big day from Divelbliss and a good showing in the field.They did.Wertz was pleased with the showing of Tom Smith and Rick Powers in the intermediates. Both have a good shot at placing in the state meet scheduled for next weekend at Shippensburg State College.Powers ran his 330 intermediates with little rest — running his 220 heat and then 10 minuteslater pushed Smith across the finish line for a second in the intermediates.The DuBois Area coach is also working on a good mile relay team in looking for a school mark in the event.
