It took six innings for the experience factor to show up on the scoreboard, but when it did it proved to be the difference in the game as the Lions rallied for a run in the sixth to nip the Knights, 3-2, and advance to the second round against Hueneme Tuesday.With Westminster runners at first and third and no outs in the sixth, the Lions’ Dave Harris lifted a high foul fly down the right field line. Instead of letting the ball fall harmlessly foul, Notre Dame’s young right fielder, Van Jordan, made a spectacular skidding catch. Unfortunately for the Knights, Dave Twiss tagged at third and strolled home with the winning run.4-A Wrap“That’s the bailgame right there,” Westminster coach Rick Hayes said. “You can’t catch that ball. Earlier in the game is another story, but you can’t catch it in that situation.”It was a rather ignominious route to defeat for Notre Dame. Until that inning, the third-place team from the Del Rey League had given the Sunset League-champion Lions all they could handle and then some.Harris had “one of his best fastballs this year,” according to Hayes, but it was his reliable breaking pitch that got him out of his biggest jam.
