Indian baseballers finish with 4-5 recordShawneetown’s baseball Indians closed out their spring season with a 4-5 record last week as they downed Eldorado behind the brilliant two-hit shutout pitching of Bruce Bard, and lost to Ridgway 4-0.Against Eldorado, Coach Gary Patton’s Indians scored an unearned run in the first inning and Bard made it stand up as the big senior righthander allowed only two hits, while fanning 11 and walking only two. Bard had a no-hitter going for 5 1-3 innings before a scratch single by opposing hurler Ernie Sizemore in the sixth spoiled the pitching gem. Sizemore, in absorbing the loss, also allowed only two hits, while fanning 4 and walking 3.Shawneetown scored in the first after Bard’s two-out fly ball was dropped for an error, followed by a single by Bill Woodup the middle, with Bard racinghome. Bard accounted for the Indians’ other hit with a single in the third.Bard upped his mound record to 4-1 on the season with the win.Against Ridgway last Thursday afternoon, Bard and the Eagles’ Tony Cox locked up in another pitching duel, with each hurler allowing only three hits, but Bard was the loser due tosome timely hitting by the Eagles sandwiched around errors and bases-on-balls by the Indians. Ridgway scored twice in the first and fifth innings for the only runs of the contest. Ricky Bard, younger brother of Bruce, Terry Stearns and Robert Patton accounted for the three hits off Cox. Cox.Bard, in seeing his record drop to 4-2 on the season, fanned 10 and walked 5 in addition to allowing three hits.
