Campbellsport Favored in Flyway Track MeetBy TOM KOHL(Assistant Snorts Editor)Coaches of the three schools expected to contend for the third F1 y w a y Conference Track meet crown are in complete agreement that Campbellsport is the favorite. The meet will again be held at the UW-Fond du Lac track, starting at 4 p.m. Thursday with field events. Trials will be intermingled with finals in the running events, with the mile run the first final at 5:15 p.m.John Reszka, coach of North Fond du Lac’s two-time champions, and Dodgeland’s Dwaine Krentz give Campbellsport the nod, and Cougar coach Bruce Wienserski also feels his team is justifiably favored.“On the basis of previous meets this spring, we have to be the favorite,” Wienserski said. His Cougars own victories over both North Fond du Lac and Dodgeland. They beat the Orioles in a quadrangular meet and last Friday in the Biackhawk invitational at Grafton, while topping Dodgeland In the Marshland Invitational a t Mayville and in a dual meet last week.Dodgeland’s victory over Campbellsport came in the Cougars’ own invitational, which featured relay competition,Campbellsport Is raring to go. “We’re 100 per cent healthy. Dave Seibel (a miler), who sprained an ankle and was out for two weeks, rejoined us and ran a 4:40mile at Grafton last Friday,” Wienserski said. The Cougar coach plans on using his ace performer, Rich Martiny, in the 440-yard dash, high jump, long Jump and on the mile relay team. Martiny is the Flyway record holder in the half mile, winning last year in 2:01.7.North Fond du Lac’s Jim Beier in the long jump (21-214) and Horicon’s Bob Young in the 100-yard dash (10.3 seconds) will be other record-holders on the premises.Wienserski explained his reason for using Martiny in the 440, saying, “By running Rich there, we’ll be resting him for the mile relay.”Larry Martiny, Rich’s younger brother, is a double threat in the 120-yard high and 180-yard low hurdles; Tom Campagna in the pole vault; Seibel in the mile; and Glenn Stommel in the two mile run are other threats for the Cougars. In fact, Stommel is the defending two mile champion. He won last year in 10:08.5.•North Fond du Lac has two defending champions in Tom Beaster (shot put) and Beier. The Orioles also have Terry Cruz, who was second to Martiny last year in the 880.Beier and Cruz will be our heavy -duty performers,” Reszka said. Both juniors will be on North Fond du Lac’s 880 and mile relay teams, while Beier will also enter the 440 and long jump, and Cruz the half mile.“We’ll have to score well in the weights, Reszka said.Beaster and Tom Zoeh will be competing in both the shout put and discus.Dodgeland’s answer to Rich Martiny, Beier and Cruz is senior sprinter Gary Wild. He normally runs in the 100, 220 and 440, but Krentz plans on using him in only two of the sprints and on a relay team,“I’m not sure yet what events he will run, but we’ll try and place him where he’ll hurt North Fond du Lac and Campbellsport the most,” the Trojan coach said. The other four Flywaymembers — Oakfield, Lomira, Laconia and Horicon — may decide the champion of the meet. They could take points away from the three, favorites.Oakfield is strong in the distance races with Steve Yantz (two mile) and A1.Geisthardt (mile); Lomirahas Greg Raube in theweights; Laconia features hurdlers Warren Leemon and Jeff Splitgaber; and Horicon has Young in the sprints.
